Well, whee dawgee. I just discovered that the beta-blocker wot I am on affects adenosine receptors so that caffeine has a swift and radical effect on the heart.

<cue irresponsible attitude>
Which explains why my supposedly-throttled-back pumping engine hit 110% of theoretical max* during a 10k blast on the flat after two large ones yesterday.  And you can bet that with two espresso machines in the kitchen I'm going to tell the cardiologist. Well, next time he spots a hiccup in the holter, maybe.

Hey, I went like a bat out of hell. Now I know what to put in the bidon.
</irresponsible attitude>

* and if you subscribe to the whole theoretical max scam I have a great used car here.

think I might be coming down with an ear infection.  Thought my left lower wisdom tooth was on the move last Weds/Thurs, but no swelling of the gum. Instead, ear feels blocked, achey, corner of the jaw feels a bit sore and neck is a bit tender to the touch.   Cotton wool and olive oil in it last night didn't pull out any great gobbets of wax, so looks like it's not blocked up in that way.

At least I'm home next week so can go to the docs

another broken clavicle.  yesterday evening i decided to use the cycle path as i was worried that drivers would be hot, sweaty, and concentrating less.  Perhaps i was concentrating less as I came to a park entrance across the path with normal curbs, hit the far curb and instead of mounting the curb went head over heels and landed on my shoulder.  Then had to get up and finish cycling home using one hand.  could feel the ends overlapping so pulled my shoulder out and back until I felt the ends engage and before the spasm set in.

My wife was away up North seeing family so I had a shower and a coffee before getting a taxi into the hospital.  fracture confirmed and into the fracture clinic today.

Ouch! (Such a DOCTOR way of self-treating *grin*) and hope you heal well soon.  I must say hospitals are more civilised as a patient with HotDrink inside you.

That does sound very unpleasant. GWS (I did the same in 2015 but landed on my arm which resulted in soft tissue injury which lasted three years! The most impressive thing about it was that a BMW stopped to check I was okay....  ;D )

Anyway, I am now worried. My GP has just phoned. They have the results of the MRI check on my back and would like to see me.

Friday would be great, I said.

"Er, she has an appointment available this afternoon at 4pm. Could you make it then....?"

Bugger. I am quite a worrier so now I am scared it's something major....

Thanks.

It's been an interesting afternoon thinking of the worse it could be and then looking at recumbents if I can longer ride an upright.....  ;D

Looks like I won't be getting a bent after all  :facepalm: ;D

So, I have a "moderate left side foraminal narrowing of L3 and L4 due to hypertrophic arthritis" along with "moderate central canal and bilateral lateral recess narrowing in L4 and L5" and finally, "A prominent left paracentral disc bulge with mild depression of the left S1 nerve root."

The specialist letter ends: "this demonstrates multiple levels of potential neural compression." and "Incidental findings are frequently identified and further clinical correlation is advised in terms of surgical intervention."

This last line worries me a little although my GP did say first, as the sciatica is not permanent, they would try me on physio before doing anything more serious.

I have been told that I should start swimming and cycling again as soon as I can and that an upright would be fine.

Goodish news I think....well things could have been worse I think!

ouch Chrisb, gws

Essexian, hope the physio work well for you, the key ime is getting one that understands your normal, and won't say things like "isn't riding 100km a bit extreme?"

as for my ears, the olive oil had done its trick, practice nurse did her bit with the warm water, and I could hear the cars following me up the road on my way home. Good idea really with a cycling holiday next week

@essexian, here's hoping.

NEway, I'm just back from doc with the OK to halve my BB dose* yet again, so that the 5 little bundles of joy remaining in the box will suffice for a sojourn in the desert** or a Parliamentary recess.  However, he now wants a pro-BNP*** check for diminished pumping oomph. Oh, and dial back the caffeine. :( Not to zero, though. :)

The damnable thing is that none of the symptoms he's investigating were present (a) before the Thane of Glamis cardiologist murdered a night's sleep with simultaneous BP & ECG holters and then inflicted the BBs after a single salvo of AF that occurred about an hour after I'd kick-started myself with two cups of tea & two espressos next day and (b) before the BBs sent my riding pleasure & post-ride recovery to hell.

17 days on from my laparotomy to fix a twisted bowel, and I'm still surprised at how week and feeble I am!  To think, just last month I did my first 200km Audax, now I think I'd be doing well to cycle 10km...  :facepalm:

I seem to have caught Phantosmia (olfactory hallucination).

We both have suffered badly from the plague that we very likely caught from the new bio hazard in the family erm baby. Peli was sick for about 6 weeks and I for about 4. Both of us were hit hard on our weak spots - Peli lungs and sinus/middle ears for me. I just couldn't sake it, even with the help of sudafed, I had to take it for longer than normal. Just sat there never leaving or breaking out in full blow, but hard enough to weaken me (and Peli) so I had to have 2-3 weeks to recover.

Over the last two weeks I have noticed the smell of cigarette smoke, just like when someone who smokes walks past you. But since this little spot of heat we are having, I have the smell and borderline taste all the time. I reminds me of when I lived with my folks where my mum smoked 30+ a day. Today it was at it's worse where I started to cough now and again, just like when smoke annoys you and causes a dry throat.

I did notice while sick that my taste and smell was worse than it is when I'm sick and also I notice that it haven't returned to normal yet.

Other reason for getting phantosmia is a migraines, head injuries, strokes, which I'm very sure that I don't suffer from. The cure I can see is that it will go away on its own in time, oh joy.
Current mood: AARRRGGGGHHHHH !!! #bollockstobrexit

The saga continues....

So, I return from seeing the Arthritis specialist with further tales of daring deeds and dragons put to the sword...

Actually, I return with tales of GP's not being able to read X rays and yet another change in my diagnosis from arthritis with bone spurs to gout plus a twice broken foot...... yes, back to gout!  :facepalm:

It seems that I have been very unlucky and simply had a very bad attack of gout which has taken 10 weeks to clear (thankfully, its on the way out). Ten weeks is rather a long time, but not unknown I was told. My foot however, shows signs of me breaking my big toe at least once: there is a large piece of bone hanging off the side, while half of the bone below the little toe is also detached. I have no memory of either of these injuries but both are historic so not the cause of my recent issues. These had been misread by my GP as bone spurs.... GP's should stay away from X rays I was told!

So, the plan to take things forward is to have yet another blood test for the acid which causes gout to confirm this now the acid is no longer forming crystals and then onto the anti gout medication for life. This is likely to cause more gout in the short term which is brilliant and just what I need but should keep me clear thereafter. If that doesn't work, then they will look again but it's definitely gout...100%

Let's hope it is although I have sharpened my battle axe and my Squire has my chain mail ready......  ;D

Yours & Donald Trump's.

Good luck with the anti-gout.  For the laugh, I was originally diagnosed with diabetes after the position I was holding James Clavel's Noble House in to read it let uric acid crystals build up in a tendon channel, giving a mild case of gout in the elbow. The GP took at look at the blood test, had a chuckle at the elbow then gave me the rest of the bad news along with a hearty recommendation to cut out the good life or else. That, and a prescription a yard long.

I am now 12 days since the injury. I have done 2 Pilates classes and 2 sessions on the turbo. First was 40 minutes on Thursday and 55 today.

Pilates teacher has been superb. Totally changed my whole session to keep my shoulder and right arm still but gave my abs, core and legs a good session.

Now down to 2 paracetamol at bed time and an occasional ice pack during the day.

Found a new term for the condition that afflicts me just now: diabetes burnout.  I'm sick to death of the drugs and the miserable diet, I'm depressed and liable to become flaming angry for half nothing, I've started eating anything I bloody well feel like and with beta-blockers punishing me every time I ride I'm jacking in the bike until something changes. I can ride if I take 2 espressos & 2 paracetamol before going out, but it takes my quads 5 or 6 days to heal thereafter and it's no fun with medics chattering in my head the whole ride. I also know that with coronary artery disease the paracetamol isn't a good idea. Fuckit neither is sitting home getting fat.

Seeing the quack this afternoon to tell him I'm stopping the beta-blockers before I kill myself.

Here's wishing you a steady-handed sawbones.  Or screwbones in your case, I'd presume.  Do they leave the plates in these days or take them out after the bones have knit?

Meantime, my GP gave the nod to my beta-blocker withdrawal but told me to cut out the coffee and keep my heart under 150 on the bike until the BBs have had time to leach out.  Acceptable.
