New bike hire scheme in Glasgow
« on: 23 June, 2014, 11:57:44 pm »
We're getting our own hire bike scheme, from tomorrow onwards: http://www.nextbike.co.uk/en/news/glasgow-scheme-launch--24th-june/

There's a docking station just down the road from me, and it was stocked with bikes as I passed earlier this evening. Might have to have a go on one!

I saw some stands on Saturday - they looked just like sheffield stands rather than a London style docking station.

They do appear to be bog-standard Sheffield stands - the bikes are just locked to them with combination cable locks.

I've not seen seen any of the bikes being used yet, but I don't see how they could stop anyone from locking their own bike to one of the stands if it happened to be vacant... ???

Nottingham has a system like that.  You do something SMS-ish to get the combination.  No idea how well it works.

Apparently it is a local branding of a system that is run in loads of cities worldwide. You could in theory join the Glasgow one and then use the bikes in e.g. Stuttgart.
