Yes there's still two and a bit months to go but I doubt that anything's going to come close to last Sunday's ride from Lynwilg, near Aviemore, to Carrbridge,  known locally as the Burma Road.
Starts with an enormous climb with magnificent views over to the Cairngorms

Swings NW but keeps going up

And up

And up

Reaches 2000 ft before dropping down into the gorgeous River Dulnain

Looking back up river

Swings off NW again

Before joining one of Wade's roads SE to Carrbridge, including this handsome bridge over the Dulnain at Sluggan

What a day

Who needs a mountain bike?

I did that route a couple of years ago on my Thorn tourer: excellent ride, though there were one or two points where the track was too bad to ride and I walked.  No big problem, and it gives you a chance to admire the scenery!

Point taken. I usually take my Thorn tourer with me when visiting Scotland, and do venture off road with it (we did the Cape Wrathe road track a couple of months ago), but the pictures just inspired me to take a more suitable off-roader (or at least fit semi-knoblies to the Thorn) next time so that I can really explore a bit more.

Pardon the ignorance . . .

How far is that?

Could it be done by an enthusiastic (and very fit) 10/11 year old?

How far away is the Air Ambulance (for when I cark it!)?
VELOMANCER

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

The route above is 19 miles but that doesn't include the return from Carrbridge to Aviemore, which taking the offroad Speyside Way route via Boat of Garten I would guess would add another 10-11 miles.  Re the air ambulance, yes its definitely worth bearing in mind as the highest point is pretty remote, the surface is quite loose in places, and the descents, especially if doing it in the opposite direction to above, are very steep.   If we'd been on road bikes (ie touring bikes) we'd have definitely have been walking in places, and if we'd been on the tandem we'd probably have walked most of it !
