Going against the usual "whole food" "river cottage" blah blah "grow your own home made weasel" "I will die if I eat wheat" "soya milk" "I just bought a bread maker" hemp wearing feel that most of these threads quickly take on...I went to the chippy for lunch and had humble chips with far more salt than is good for you.

They were right nice as well.

I did not quite have change to afford a spam fritter to go with my full fat can of coke :(

I had a lovely lunch of oatcakes, baba ganoush, lambs' lettuce with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, feta cheese, and grapes. Could quite go a biscuit now.

I took it in my Laptop Lunches lunchbox. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002KRFLR8/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=103612307&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B002IAJFSS&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1N9QYXN0FY7RYDB841MB) I am quite excited about that in a sad geeky way because I bought the box a couple of years ago and although I've used some of the individual tubs separately, today was the first day I used the whole thing.

The baba ganoush went in the medium lidded pot and the salad went in the big lidded pot. The grapes went in the big unlidded pot. The salad dressing went in the smallest lidded pot which I then tucked into the smallest unlidded pot and filled the gap with feta. The oatcakes didn't need to be transported in the lunchbox.

*saddo*

A digestive biscuit, possibly buttered ... because : I've just painted the front door and can't close it yet so I can't go out and forage for food - I had the last of the bread this morning and I can't work the bread machine - there appears to be no stock of cake available  .... hopefully my wife, who's been away at a work thing for a couple of days will be back this evening!

Went to Cornercopia in Brixton for a sunday roast.  The nut roast was amazing: a dryish cake studded with whole pecans, macadamias, chestnuts, walnuts and chick peas in a huge portion that could have fed two.

A home-made tunnbrödsrulle

For those who haven't grown up with this ingenious Swedish fast food, it's a square wrap (now helpfully available in Tesco's), lightly buttered, with mashed potato and one or two proper Swedish hot dogs (IKEA for that one), liberal amounts of ketchup and "grillkrydda"-a sort of bbq type spice mix.  Wrap up and enjoy as messily as possible!   ;D

Often served in Sweden with a gherkin or prawn mayonnaise or just minced gherkin

Friends in the office are highly overrated.

I am contemplating wensleydale and beetroot.

I couldn't motivate myself to make any lunch, so I ended up having two big glasses of orange juice, followed by a cup of tea.  I then spent an hour with my legs tightly crossed during meeting; I didn't feel that I could leave for a loo break twice in a 90 min meeting.

Chips dipped into Longley Farm blackcurrant yogurt was one of my favourite lunches at school. It wasn't on the menu; you had to buy the chips and yogurt and do the dipping yourself.

Bobb and I have had a home made red onion tarte tatin, with mustardy potato salad, and, er, salad.

That happened to my friend. She was veggie for years then suddenly craved sausages.  She fought it off until she was pregnant, which was when she sTarted to crave steak.   She claimed that I told her that more often than not, pregnant vegetarians return to eating meat.  Actually, I said that some pregnant vegetarians crave fish and return to eating fish.

Ps I'm not suggesting that you are pregnant BrianI, unless there is something you are not telling us......?!

A splendid cheddar omelette fashioned by my own fair hand, consumed with bread, fashioned by my own fair breadmaker, and butter. Also: home-made marmalade (that too was fbmofh). Lastly, a large and sticky Belgian bun with icing and the proverbial cherry on the top, fashioned by Grouts the Bakers, of Hamlet Court Road.

The Lady in the Baker's Shop asked me if I wanted a loaf and I said that I didn't, explained that about 98% of the bread we have eaten during the past 9 years has been from the breadmaker and she seemed so interested that she might buy one.

Finely-sliced escalope** of veal fried very briefly in olive oil on a high heat then set aside while I reduced a good splash of Madeira, added a good dose of cream and the secret herbal ingredient, then returned the veal to it to reheat and imbibe the sauce a little.  Served immediately, unfortunately with chips: it would have been better with rösti or rice, but the spuds were excellent anyway.

** collops to you.

Spare ribs. Braised three hours in stock with carrots, shallots, basil, whole coriander seeds and dill, then separated, brushed with sauce & grilled. Sauce was a hybrid of a James Beard recipe and standard Szechuan hot, involving Madeira, Tabasco, pepper, pulped shallots, ditto garlic, ditto ginger, apple juice, lemon juice, fresh basil and I forget what else. No soy sauce, abhorrent stuff takes over everything it touches. Served up with sautéed spuds and the veg dredged out of the stock.

I have a butcher chum who trims off all the excess fat and inedible bits before weighing up. He also picks his animals out at the farm, so the meat was superb and, once trimmed, not particularly fatty.

I was aiming to serve six people but two went home before lunch because their cat was alone (my god) and the remaining four of us polished off their share. Best I ever made.

For dessert Mrs. T. had made a steamed lemon-curd pudding with custard made from scratch. Yum.

Ribs are just about my favourite meaty product ever, your recipe sounds lovely! My favourite, however are those served at my favourite Italian restaurant, Prima Pizzeria in Ripon. So far I have worked out that they are cooked in a sauce with fennel, honey, tomatoes, but am missing what else is in there ( and the chef and owner will not tell me!)

Not today, as I know it will be the usual work day fare of sandwich and crisps, but yesterday I had:

Anti-pasti (gorgeous thin sliced ham, olives and leaves)
Rare aged roast beef and yorkshire puds, plus all the trimmings
A gorgeous cheese board of local cheeses, complete with fruit cake.

It was yummy, and WOULD have cost a fortune, had it not been for the fact the last time we visited the restaurant where I had that lunch, the Salad Nicoise had no anchonvies (and the spuds were warm), that Mrs T's chicken was a little bit pink and they forgot to give the fathers sat at the table (myself and the FiL) our complimentary pints.  Thus we complained and received a "Free 3 course Sunday Lunch for two" voucher, so we only had to pay for TLD's lunch (which she devoured!) and our drinks.  Talking of which, I had a large glass of their house Rioja.  Gorgeous is not the word for it!

PS This was at the Carpenter's Arms in Felixkirk, not known for it's cheap food, as it's part of the Providence group of pubs/hotels

Today I made myself a 3-egg omelette in which I melted some grated cheddar cheese. With this I consumed the rustic French bread (Panasonic recipe) whose ingredients I had dumped in the bread maker last night. I had a further slice of bread with home-made marmalade, followed by a rather good russet apple.

So, apart from the butter and the apple, I cooked the whole lot myself and it were gradely.

The Inlaw Paw's 98th birthday nosh. I did spare ribs in me own sauce that resulted a few years ago from running two recipes together by accident: apple juice, orange & lemon ditto, madeira, sherry, lots of garlic, ditto root ginger, tomato purée, balsamic vinegar, "that's too much, John" salt, Cayenne pepper, paprika, Tabasco... forget what else.  The I.P. took a rack and did for it like a good'un.  Horses doovers was assorted Italian hams & salamis, cheese course was Camembert, Roquefort, Munster and an artisanal goat cheese with green salad, dessert was a startling cake/ice-cream confection ordered by son & partner from a speciality pâtisserie in Strasbourg.  Yrgacheffe to follow.

Cajun roast pork, Paul Prudhomme's recipe.  Lots of pepper whereof cayenne of that ilk, paprika, garlic, thyme, oregano, chopped green peppers, red peppers & onions ditto, more garlic, rubbed into slots à la Orloff and slow-roasted for n hours where n varies according to when you remember to start prep. Also rubbed the meat with lemon-juice 'cos best-before date was last Friday.  The hungry dogs look up and are not fed.

Later: And bloody good it was, too.

I have a book by PP that I bought in the 80s, before he started flogging "K-Paul's spices for" this, that and the other.  In my book all the spice mixes are given in generic terms.  I want to try blackened fish but our cooker hood isn't industrial grade.

A sort of a seafood Carbonara: fresh basil, dill & red onions cut into toenails, all fried for a bit then prawns and a couple of broken-up salmon fillets added & allowed to cook a bit further. Parmesan straight into the pan to coat everything a bit. That lot dumped on top of a dish of tagliatelle tossed with butter and two egg yolks.

Just right for a cold, wet, blustery Saturday.

The nice thing about fresh basil is that if you let it cook for a bit it develops a deeper, more savoury taste than when uncooked.  I still have the perfume of it on my fingers from when I chopped it, too.

A Hindu temple has just moved in on the ground floor of the building in which I rent my studio. They're here for at least two years whilst they demolish and rebuild their own place. A commercial kitchen got installed here a couple of weeks ago and now everything's up and running, they're serving delicious, free vegetarian lunch every single day. I've just been down to eat with them for the first time and it's wonderful.

Broad beans with mashed potatoes. Aren't broad beans disappointing though? You have a huge pile of beans and by the time you've shelled them, there are hardly any beans. So I left some of the smaller pods whole. They're perfectly edible but have a faintly odd taste, a bit like the smell of marigold leaves. Sort of. I totally will get frozen broad beans next time.

Blackadder: Right Baldrick, let's try again shall we? This is called adding. If I have two beans, and then I add two more beans, what do I have?
Baldrick: Some beans.
Blackadder: Yes... and no. Let's try again shall we? I have two beans, then I add two more beans. What does that make?
Baldrick: A very small casserole.
Blackadder: Baldrick, the ape creatures of the Indus have mastered this. Now try again. One, two, three, four. So how many are there?
Baldrick: Three.
Blackadder: What?
Baldrick: ...and that one.
Blackadder: Three and that one. So if I add that one to the three what will I have?
Baldrick: Oh. Some beans.
Blackadder: Yes. To you Baldrick, the Renaissance was just something that happened to other people, wasn't it?

Skin them! If I skinned them I'd never get around to eating them! Which is just as well, as there'd be nothing left to eat. Actually, I'm not entirely sure it's necessary to cook them either. They're pretty good raw, at least the small ones. Didn't try the pods raw though. And probably won't.

Of course I rediscover this at least once a year.  ::-)

I believe the Brevet Cymru is a 400km Audax ride (subject to some current uncertainty) between somewhere in the vicinity of the Severn Bridge and the Mariner Cafe in New Quay, Ceredigion. Perhaps other yacfers could correct me if I'm wildly wrong about this.

ETA: There is much agonising about the future of the Brevet Cymru in the Audax board.
Those of us who have done the Brevet Cymru have very fond memories of it (though I have advised against chish & fips for those of delicate constitution as tasting the same again on the climb out of New Quay might not be pleasurable).

I spent Christmas one year at Maen y Groes...

Newquay is the place in Cornwall where my left crank parted company with my bicycle when I was doing a solo LEJOG in 1986.

Mrs. T42 brought the chocolate back from Straspberry on Saturday.  I'm still trying to decide if I like it. It tastes fruity as well as being a bit bitter - the kind of thing you try out on guests. Marries well with the coffee, though.

That weight excludes the offal and stock bones. There was almost no meat on the rib cage. Young buck. Large enough but hadn't filled out. The kids are drying the hooves. The liver was badly ruptured and one rump was heavily bruised.

Went out for lunch with SWMBO today to a new-ish cafe-cum-bistro type place in Ely.

I had a starter of tomatoes, beetroots, blue cheese with a poached duck egg.  Followed by a very large (too large really vs dietary needs) bit very good burger with cheese and bacon, very well cooked and tasty, plus courgettes and panchetta on the side.  No bun of course.

SWMBO had some of my starter, followed by a cheese souffle that looked very good, some greens and thick cut chips with truffle and parmesan.  The chips were good, but could have done with a bit more parmesan for my taste.  She had a tarte tatin for afters, far too sweet and icky for me.

I think I'll have a very light dinner this evening.

Aldi had pre-sliced kebab meat and corresponding buns on Tuesday, so cobbled together a couple of döner today using moist coleslaw, onion & tomato. No yogurt for sauce so used sour cream, lemon juice &  garlic. Inflated the buns in the toaster and did the meat in the air fryer. Parfick.

Yesterday: pavé of beef in sherry, cream & Roquefort sauce.  An entrecôte would have been better. So would have Madeira, but we've run out.

Left-over savoury rice (chicken / chorizo / tomatoes etc), with a fried egg on top.  Sort of arroz a la cubana.

Saltimbocca alla romana, with fresh sage and most excellent sprouts.

The main difficulty in preparation lies in not eating all the prosciutto before starting to cook.

Pork filet stuffed with powdered almonds made into a paste with a little white wine, half-dried apricots, fresh sage, garlic and oregano, seasoned with coriander, green, black, white and red pepper; the whole thing wrapped in Parma ham and flaky pastry and baked in the oven.  I left it a wee bit too long in the oven but it was still the juiciest pork filet I've had for a long time.  Left-over stuffing didn't last long.

Trouble is that MrsT doesn't eat meat, so I've got cold pork for the next two or three days.

We had one pack of mince pies between us.

I didn't enjoy them and will wait another 11 months till I try them again.

Blegh.  They make mince pies sweeter every year. All I can taste is sugar.

I only ever eat home-made mince pies these days, for precisely that reason.

My sister makes very good ones, with frangipane topping.

This year, I have been making mince pies as an excuse to practise my pastry-making technique. I made two batches with puff pastry, which were fantastic, if I say so myself. And over the weekend, I made another batch with pâte sablée1. It was an interesting experiment but probably not one I'll repeat, as they were a little too sweet for our tastes - though nowhere near as bad as mass produced shop-bought versions.

My wife makes them with a plain shortcrust, which I like but always feel they need something to lift them, which is why I tried the pâte sablée. I might try a pâte brisée2 for the next attempt.

For next year, I'll get my arse in gear and make my own mincemeat too. I've been using shop-bought, which is generally pretty revolting. It's not like it's a difficult thing to make, just needs to be done well in advance to give it time to mature.

1. enriched shortcrust made with huge amounts of butter, plus icing sugar and egg yolks
2. enriched shortcrust, but not sweetened

When I resort to shop mincemeat I always boost it. Just adding a bit of chopped apple, cherries, chopped nuts, dried apricot lifts it from sweet gloop to something a bit more acceptable.

I like your style.

(ETA: my wife does the same - usually adds a bit of chopped apple and mixed dried fruit, plus a slug of brandy)
