Product Recall: Look KeO pedals
« on: 14 August, 2008, 04:45:52 am »
Saw an advert on TV a couple of days ago saying that Look Keo pedals were being recalled, at least in Washington state. Anyone know anything, as I've got these on the Omega?

Google revealed this

Bicycle Pedals Recalled by Look Cycle; Pedals Can Break Causing Cyclists to Fall

Seems to be all pedals manufactured during 2004-2005 except ti version.

I bought 2 pairs earlier this summer... Hopefully they would have been manufactured later than 2005.

Check the date stamp on the pedals to make sure.  The site above describes what to look for.

Thanks very much FatBloke for raising the subject.

Could the replacement service just be for the USA only?

I can't find anything about it on Look's European website.

I have since found this  on the US web site.

I think an email to Look Europe is in order.

But first, breakfast!

From the link above:

"The recalled pedals comply with CPSC and European safety standards, but your satisfaction and safety come first at LOOK, which is why we will replace your first-generation KEO chromoly axles with a newer, improved design at no cost to you."

Translation: Europeans won't sue us if they fall off their bikes, so it's ok.

The recall in the UK appears to be being organised by UK Look importer Fisher Outdoor, details here.

I stand corrected! But it's been kept a bit quiet, don't you think?

Just checked mine - 2007

Thought I'd stickify this thread as Look Keo pedals are so popular, and many users won't know about the problem.

Other recalls and major safety issues could be added here for other prodcts, and I would then modify the title.

Bit of a first, the steel axle being subject to breakage when the TI one isn't.  Conversely, people like TA try not to sell you a TI BB unless you're below a certain weight.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

Yes, it was ironic that I avoided the Ti version (at first) because I thought it would be less reliable (as well as more expensive).

I took mine to the lbs about 3 weeks ago.

They're still awaiting the parts and tools!  :-\

That's bad.  Glad I didn't bother with mine in the end.

I just threw the affected axles away and saved the bodies as spares for my other pedals.

Email to Fisher Outdoor Leisure:-

Quote
In mid August I took my Look KeO pedals to my local bike shop because of a recall to have new axles fitted.

I have now been 3 months without pedals. All the bike shop get when they phone you are "the cheque is in the post" type promises. No replacement axles or tools ever turn up.

I've used Look pedals for 12 years now. I will never use them again, but I want the pedals I own repaired.

Why have I had to wait so long? This is a manufacturing error and the pedals should have been replaced in entirety!

Is there any chance of any action on this soon?

The small claims court is beckoning!

Regards
