Team BlackSheep particularly looking forward to "Clee to Heaven".

LATEST KK AND CLEE AUDAX NEWS:NEWS FOR ENTRANTS

Well all things are running hunky dory at the moment.

THE FIELD for 2015 has broken all previous records. From Clee to Heaven is now over-capacity with seventy registered entrants. We are only allowed sixty at Rays Farm, oops! The Kidderminster Killer has eighty riders and I am happy to take a further five.

FOR 2016 I am considering a third audax as an addition to the current duo. It will be slight variant of Clee to Heaven but three nasty little horrors: Two ascents up Brown Clee on private roads with a gradient of 25% and; a third ascent up Titterstone Clee. This all depends upon gaining land owner's permissions for the Brown Clee ascents. Oh, and the name for the new event "The Clee Killer". Event date tbc.

DOWNLOADS are available from http://www.beaconrcc.org.uk/audax/killerclee/index.html, assuming you did not receive the e-mail.

ROAD CLOSURES: There are two road closures but access is maintained for cyclists. These include the road between Tenbury and Hanley Broadheath on the KK; and, the Wyre Forest road to Kinlet on Clee to Heaven.

GHQ FOOD: Before you start: Porridge pots (to purchase); bananas, help-your-self toast,
When you finish: Bacon sandwiches, normal sandwiches cake and yet more cake, beans on toast plus vegan options.  On the ride: Free drinks vouchers for Acton Scott and Rays Farm controls.

Would that be the same stretch that we passed along on the rough diamond?

I've entered the KK and probably going to stay at the Clent Hills campsite as no cheap B&Bs nearby (in a tiny tent as I'll be arriving by bike from the nearest train station). Anyone had experience of the place? Presumably there is somewhere I can keep the bike at night, secured to a tree or something?

Looking forward (with trepidation) to this.

That was a very tough route  ::-) Fortunately Philip had done his weather gods bit and snatched some great weather between two very wet days---yes it`s pouring down here again after Friday`s deluge ::-)

Although an unexpected shower greeted starters at 8 am this soon eased and by Arley it had all dried off and sun was out for the first tester climb of the day out of Arley f`bridge over the Severn and up into the rolling countryside of the Wyre Forest. A testing headwind made the Stottesdon > Acton Scott section quite a drag and although billed in the ride details as not being hardest of the ride`s sections the hills just kept coming. The control at Acton Scott was very busy, so despite a lovely setting I just got my card stamped and headed off to Church Stretton to pick up a couple of meat pasties for sustenance.

As expected the Burway was tough from the grid, it`s several years since I`ve been up it and it`s not got any easier   :o However at least it was quiet and cars stopped to let the toiling riders keep going ---so no excuses for a breather !! With the clear weather the views were superb from the top of The Long Mynd, right out across Shropshire, into Wales and up towards Cadiar Idris and Berwyns mountains in North Wales. The descent down to Ratlinghope was quite tricky with a lot of gravel   in places---now if this was The Stelvio the gravel would have been swept up and cleared away overnight ;D---but it wasn`t so a careful descent was in order.

A sharp pull up and over Stiperstones with their wonderful rock tors and then down thro` twisting lanes to a final straight---into headwind---to Montgomery for a quick lunch at The Dragon pub. And a welcome relief too to reach the halfway point knowing that now the wind would be a friendly tailwind back. Having ridden PW`s Monts Madness twice now I`d wondered what the descent from Bishops Moat to Mellington would be like as a climb and now I know; a steep 16% start and then it kept going, going and going ::-)

Still just a few more climbs to go---slow descents on narrow lanes were meaning no time `gains` following hard ascents and after a careful run down to Clun it was on to Fiddlers Elbow, a truly nasty steep drag up across the hillsides. With over 130km and 2500m climbing I was very pleased to have at disposal  my 34 x 34 lowest gear---it got significant usage on the ride  I`ve been up Fiddlers Elbow many times before, sometimes on a 26 sprocket but combined fatigue and gradient--no way now

Fortunately there was a wonderful runout down to Hopton Castle, a good clear and straight downhill dash before the final drag up and over Mortimer Forest to reach Ludlow and friendly service, great food at Aragorns for a refuel on lasagne.
With Belbroughton now in (distant) view and time to spare I covered the roller road out of Ludlow and to Tenbury with full use of lower gears, being joined by Roy for the climb up and up from Tenbury to Upper sapey before I dropped  back on the Stamford bank haul back up.

Finally, after a good quick run in from Stourport, the arrivee was reached and Excellent  range of bacon sarnies and cakes, cakes and cakes (just like it said `on the  tin`)

Thanks Philip for organising this great ride and to all helpers  ---I`m so glad it was on Saturday not Fri/ Sun day !!! And mega kudos to those who had chosen this as their first Audax 200  ;D
....after the `tarte de pommes`, and  fortified by a couple of shots of limoncellos,  I flew up the Col de Bavella whilst thunderstorms rolled around the peaks above

I couldn't agree more with what James has said above, a stunning route if rather 'grippy'.

It was the first time in 20+ years I had cycled up the Burway and have no memories other than the top, I had forgotten the stunning views wow what a wonderful place if tough slog to get up there.

Stiperstones caught me a little off guard as I wasn't expecting it, perhaps that was a good thing as after the initial 20% grind it went up in steps which wasn't so bad as I had chance to get my breath back a bit.

Fiddlers Elbow was another I was blissfully unaware of and I really struggled up there and there was no breeze in amongst the trees and it felt very warm, as it turned out once over the top I recognised the hill as having travelled along the road in the opposite direction a couple of years back.

Other than the rain at the beginning it was stunning if a little windy, at least it was in the right direction from Montgomery.

Thanks Phil, The Killer Killed me!

I echo the above comments, though I just go up the hills without knowing which is which...... Long Mynd.. Which was that?

Another hill... How steep? Hmmm... Drop down to the 33:32 and keep the effort as low as possible... It's not a race, after all, but a test of self-sufficiency, self control and resilience.... Chris Froome wins the Tour with help from his team, but Audax isn't a team sport......

It's fun seeing groups of four or five youngsters (compared to me in my 60s), riding along in perfect formation, sharing the work at the front, but I prefer to ride solo if I can, doing all the work myself... That's audax self-sufficiency, and I finish or don't by my own efforts...

It amazes me when folks come along and charge up the hills like its some club run..  Don't get me wrong - I'm happy if they are enjoying themselves as they wish.... Some fly by me. Puffing and panting, and straining in every visible muscle, arms, necks, legs. Head rocking, and I imagine they are burning up their reserves by being way into the red, and of course in due time they have to slow.... and at the next control they have to have extended stops while I ride ahead again...

My first time on the ride, but not my last.. Put it in your planner !!
I’ve decided I’m not old. I’m 25 .....plus shipping and handling.

REPORT ON THE KIDDERMINSTER KILLER AND FROM CLEE TO HEAVEN AUDAXES
The weather did not look promising at first, by my goodness it did improve.  Riders remarked on the stunning crystal clear views provided along the hillier sections of the routes.  Something that did not change was the cursing of returning riders, usually aimed at the Fiddler’s Elbow on the KK or the drag up to Shatterford on the Clee to Heaven.  Neither hill comes at early stage in the event, by which time legs are fairly tired.

NEXT YEAR

Subject to necessary access permissions, I am considering an additional option for Clee to Heaven riders, a ride up each of the paved private roads to each the summits of Brown Clee. Be warned though, one is graded at 20% without a break.  These will be optional for the more masochistic riders.

The provisional date for next year’s KK and Clee audaxes are: 23rd July 2016.

SUNRISE AND SNOWDROP EXPRESS AUDAX

The ever popular Sunrise and Snowdrop Express, a 120km circuit of the Vale of Evesham, will open to entries on 1st October.  With over 260 entries,  this is usually sold out by early December. Do not leave entry too late.  http://www.beaconrcc.org.uk/audax/express/index.html

MONTGOMERY MADNESS PERMANENT

This 200km ‘Perm’ audax can be ridden at any time of year.  In effect, it follows very similar roads to The Kidderminster Killer but in the opposite direction.  To enter:  http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/PW01/

It was my 'fault' that Annie did it this year and I still have plenty of time to work on Lucy (and others) for next year's KK  :demon:
