Reboot router - your IP will usually change.  Or you could only ever log on from public wi-fi (such as in coffee shops).

Use a proxy server when browsing or accessing social networking sites.

Keep an old PAYG phone, that isn't in your name. Use this for ID confirmation on sites that require a mobile number + txt confirmation.

If you just want to browse the Tor browser works fine I'm currently using it because my ISP has decided to block some very useful torrent sites.

Hidemyass works well, but you do need to pay for it. I've used it to watch UK tv when overseas, because you can choose the location of the server you emerge onto the internet from.

A service like Hidemyass or another VPN might do the trick for getting around location-based restrictions etc. but I don't see why I'd trust some random company on the internet more than I'd trust anyone else (including the government). I have no reason to believe they wouldn't roll over with a little encouragement.

Tor might be an option, but generally I'd say that unless you have a particular need for anonymity, don't bother. If it's on the internet, it's not 100% private.

If you want to give it a try, then there is a small, lightweight Linux distribution called Tails which comes preconfigured for anonymity through TOR and is suitable to run from a live DVD or bootable USB.
