Dry January 2014
« on: 05 December, 2013, 08:27:08 pm »
I'm in, again, as moral support for Mr Smith.
Anyone else fancy giving it a go?

(No, not a promise for weather, sorry)

It's part of my plans as well. I'm hoping to lose some weight this time.
Despite your previous reservations boab, I shall include low alcohol beer in my "allowed" drinks since it makes visits to the pub more enjoyable.
Proper beer I can drink all night; lime and soda/ginger beer/fizzy water etc soon get to be too much.

I'll be starting on Jan 2 since we usually do a New Year's day ride to the pub and have a couple of beers when we get back.
Call me a lightweight if you like  :)

I will be doing this. After losing 2 stone last year by counting calories I have not lost any weight this year even though I have ridden more miles than in any of the previous 35 years. By cutting out the ridiculous amount of alcohol I normally drink for one whole month I should make inroads into the next two stone of excess blubber.

May not be easy though, occasionally we decide not to drink during the week - the best we have done is to last until Wednesday night...

As ever, I'm in by default, but thinking of those for whom this involves real effort.  Best of luck to everyone!

Same here, I will try to avoid my approximately monthly nip of whisky during January and think of others for whom this is a greater struggle.

Good luck for everyone signing up for this.

I stopped drinking[1] some years back so I'm in it by default.

[1] That makes it sound as if I was an alkie. I wasn't.

Go on then!  After the 1st tho!

I'm gonna limp to the pub and drink 'til the rest of me is as numb as my arse.

I'm sure I'd save a fortune and lose a load of weight. But the will isn't there.

I'm not remotely sad.

Good luck to all attempting it.

Maybe.  January is tedious enough though.  I'm sure August would be an easier dry month.

January is cold and dark BUT we start it full of good intentions and new gym memberships with a new-leaf turning vibe, that is quite easy to ride.

Instead of looking at how dull it'll be without drriiink (feck), look at how much fun it'll be, doing new! different! exciting! displacement/distraction activities instead.

FWIW I plan on lots of early nights.  ;)

I don't drink enough to make it worthwhile (normally about 11 units a week evenly spread) but I have virtually given up chocolate, which i used to eat a LOT of.  Turned out I wasn't even remotely addicted to it.  Good luck with the booze.

I had a BIG glass of white wine with my turkey dinner last night; it might have been my first alcohol in 2013...

Since January contains New Year's Day and both of our birthdays, I'm not sure I want to pick it as my dry month. Good luck to those who are giving up something they like though!

I drink much less than 11 units a month!

Since January contains New Year's Day and both of our birthdays, I'm not sure I want to pick it as my dry month.

Mr Smith's birthday is the 24th. We generally find some other way to celebrate.

I think it demonstrates how central alcohol is to us if we can't contemplate celebrations without it.

I'm very lucky, in that I can take or leave booze, it's just not a big deal to me. I am unlikely to find doing without even remotely difficult. I do appreciate that this is not the case for everyone, and will be doing everything I can to assist those for whom it isn't so straightforward.

I drink between four and ten units a day, usually wine but sometimes beer, that is why I am not loosing any weight!

Not only am I doing dry January, I will not have a dnk unless I have done some serious exercise during the day over the Xmas hols.
