[HAMR] February 6th
« on: 06 February, 2015, 05:52:33 am »
Another cold day to be warmed up by the thought of Steve ploughing through his miles, more than a man on mission, an inspiration while we watch his steady progress across familiar and unfamiliar roads, bringing back memories of our own little adventures.  Go Steve!

Day 37 in the one year time trial. Steve is riding his bike...

Incroyable.

Late start today, not surprising after yesterday.

Hope the wind is kinder there than here, we have around -3°C & 30+ kph NE with heavier gusts due to stay all day.  Our shutters were bumping all night.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

A bit better here, less breeze and around freezing.

Good luck for today Steve!

Another hardcore British winter day for you to smash through in your usual Teethgrinder style.   ;D
Does not play well with others

I've just done 30 miles off road with an av. temp of -2c. My feet are like blocks of ice despite thick socks and thermal boots. My admiration for Steve grows by the day!

When I load his map it isn't displaying place names or temperatures, which isn't very helpful. It does show that it is sunny though.

It's 5°C in Southend, so hopefully it's not too cold for Steve.

There is a suggestion around  that Steve is looking to do about 170/180 today - and have a bit more rest time.
No certainty about this - just something that I have picked up.

Steve's judgment about how to use rest is probably second to absolutely nobody else's. One of his many strengths. (Thoughts based on the stuff he's done, and written, in previous years.)

...

Below a certain zoom level it doesn't. Just now (~50 miles) he's got sunshine, 34°F & 9 mph NE wind.  Not bad.

+1  His advice helped me to keep going on the Brimstone last year.

I saw Steve as I drove home from work between Lullington & Edingale, looking as comfortable as you can in about -2c

It doesn't seem to be doing it for any zoom level.

The Trackleaders webpage doesn't seem to be appearing quite right for me on Chrome but if you click 'Map Layers' then cycle the 'Weather Conditions' check box the towns re-appear.

He is currently stopped in Burton on Trent which is well known for its revitalising energy drink.

Not working for me either min IE - jsu a trackleaders issue as it's been fine until today. Well apart from randomly switching from C to F and back. And sometimes have C in some places and F in others.

Burton-on-Trent? Perhaps he is celebrating completing 10% of his allotted time 36.5 days. Is the worst of the Winter cold and dark passed?

Well not quite yet. Maybe no more snow down south, but colder than average for the rest of the month seems to be the forecast.

It's quite possible for us to have massively disruptive snowstorms right into March. I recall one in March 1970 (I think, but definitely March) in which I was waiting or a bus at 8am and no snow was lying, and the bus got stuck at about 8.30 in inches of snow, only 4 or 5 miles away. It was there for 2 days.

It was about here:

NB The A12 dual carriageway had not been built 45 years ago.

I remember there being a LOT of snow in the Midlands in the last week of April in 1981!

Yes.  I cleared over a foot of snow from our drive in Harrogate so my mum and younger brother could go and watch a movie and then they didn't go because the snow was too heavy.

But back on topic - looks like Steve is going to have another late finish today.
