Who's in for any of these? (Clashes with the Dun Run I know, but the Dun Run doesn't go to Dungeness does it?)

I'm doing the 300 as the back end of a DIY 600: Flattest Possible DIY 600 (19th/20th July - clashes with Dun Run)

Did it last year as my first 300 and enjoyed it.

Useful info:

Nearest Rail Station is Pluckley, which has trains from Charing Cross/Waterloo East/London Bridge.

For the 2am start of the 300 you can get the 23.30 from Charing Cross and it'll get you in to Pluckley at 00.48 leaving an easy 15 minutes to do the 5km to the start. Bit of a vomit comet though that train as it is the last train out of London back to Dover.

Haven't had the routesheet through yet, but last year's route looked something like this:-

Bicycle Path - Audax: Flattest Possible 300 at Bikely.com

The 200 route used the same second big loop from Bethersden (starting at about Point 215 in the above link).

I'll be knocking up a turn-by-turn GPX file at some point soon.

I'm riding, but leaving home Sat evening to DIY it into a 400.   Having only completed 2 200s this year I am hopelessly behind on chasing my SR and relying on permanents.

This is payback for having a very full and rewarding 2006 & 2007.

Hope it doesn't rain as much this year.

it only rained for about 20 mins last year (although it was about 20mm)

:o ISTR it rained from just after the 50 km checkpoint to the 75 km info, and I know I wasn't doing 75 km/h along that stretch.  And nor was Martin, coz I overtook him on that leg ;D

That bit of Romney Marsh seems to attract particularly Biblical amounts of rain (probably a conspiracy theory Nuclear Power / Philadelphia Experiment / Lynmouth floods type thing); it was enough to see at least one rider throw in the towel back at base

There was a little shower in the first hour. I remember taking brief refuge under the canopy of a petrol station. Just near Sellindge says my GPS.

But yes, the worst of it was from the St Mary's Bay checkpoint across the marsh to Rye.

I was very envious of people who had dry clothes to change in to after that first 100km loop.

Don't mind if it rains so much - just not wind. During this year's Invicta 300 the headwind across the marsh was particularly horrible....

It was unusually horrible; although the marsh always has a wind of sorts; On the El Supremo 200 of 2006 and 400 of 2007 it was actually in our favour

I did the 200 last year, and it was one of the best rides of the year. A little rain to start with and then a lovely sunny day, but not too warm. I had a visitation and I got back with over half-an-hour to spare. I also, in the last mile or so of the ride, had one of the most spectacular altercations ever with a stupid motorist who insisted on overtaking in a lane far too narrow for such a manoeuvre when there was an A road about 100 metres ahead of us. In response to my yell of insult, he rammed his vehicle into reverse and was so apoplectic with rage I reckon he took 5 years off his life.  ;D

Route checked the 300 (including the 200) yesterday with a Fairies team. Excellent ride. It has to be said we were lucky with the weather (not a drop!) so fingers crossed for next week.
As mentioned upthread, I will be at the Hythe control so please say hello etc. Andy ;D

Ah yes, reminds me. There was an email about a missing routesheet instruction:-

"
Please add at 114.8k R@X-rds.
"

I think this (or the signpost last year's routesheet referenced) was missing last year too as it explains why a few of us ended up meeting the A274 a few miles South near Standen instead of here.

Yeh, that waypoint being missing caused a lot of head scratching when constructing the route last week! I eventually figured out that the organiser MUST mean right at those crossroads otherwise it throws the next few routepoints out of kilter so I'd already put it in. Good to have clarification though!

Am so looking forward to this (the whole DIY 600 I mean, not just to FP300) - I just want to go now!

Having said that, I am currently sans lumiere. I have a dodgy front light (which has been dodgy for a while) and I've been faffing around with it for ages to try and get it stable... Have been trying desperately to find ANYWHERE which stocks and sells the B&M IXON IQ in the last week... can I find anywhere? NO! Looks like I'll have to plump for the CATEYE EL 610...

Yeh, I did yesterday but they quoted 5-6 days delivery for the light. However, just looked this morning and they are saying 3-4 days.... might just be able to squeeze it in!

Thx to San Fairy Ann for a good day out. Bit windy but good route and good support from their volunteers manning check points. Never stopped so often and eaten and drunk so much on any ride in the past - but the frequent tea and home made cake went down very well.
Cant say that I am a great enthusiast for a 2.00 am start with a 2 1/2 hour drive to get there - but by the end  I thought it was all worth the effort. Getting back across the Dartford crossing was a B***** - as the police had stopped all access to the northbound M25 from the M20.

Now about yACF members -- saw Scottlington at the start and was told that Greenbank was there - but failed to see him. Deneice was getting ready - but I am told missed the start by 10 minutes.  Jane ( who posts as Jes ) and Ed ( not sure whether he is signed up or not ) but both regulars from Witham on East Anglian rides were away at the front of the first group. Many hours later as the first of the 200 riders caught up - I met Treborb of our old home, who I knew from Paris  pre PBP - actually Simon Bennett - but he said work was now so demanding that he is a very rare visitor here - and probably under a different name.

The ride -- there was a front group of some 10 riders who galloped off down to the coast at Sandgate , where we had to turn back into the wind - ride along the sea front, before back tracking inland, uphill and back to the start, for tea and bacon rolls, after 100kms.
The moonlight on the Channel was great - silver dappled sea - quiet - just a memory to file away for good. First support stop with tea etc - and then the sky begins to lighten and there are masses of  these pink tinged clouds -- beautiful- pity that we were riding with our backs to them - but you cant have everything !
Ed did all the work leading the group into the wind for a very long way. A role he was to perform over and over again throughout the day. Fantastic help for us weaker riders. There were a couple of nasty hills as we left the coast - and I am left way behind - but Ed has decided to keep the group together - so slows down - and finally I make it back on.

Leg 2 - I leave early so as to minimise the risk of getting seriously dropped - and have a good trundle along flat quiet country lanes for some time - before the group, now about 7 strong, catch up - and I hook on again. Good views to the North at the top of some of the hills. Too early for the garden centre at Mark Cross - so tea and cake at a volunteer manned stop.
Leg 3 now to Dungeness - a new experience for me - never been there in my life.  Another volunteer manned stop at Iden Green - and we are getting mixed up with the 150km  riders, which adds to the friendliness of the ride. A very brisk gallop across the marshes - wind quite strong on our right shoulders - our group is down to 4 now. Ed , Jane and an unknown - who does things like the 12 hour TT etc + self ( still being helped whenever it is into the wind or hilly) More food and drinks at the Railway cafe. Treborb the first of the 200kms appears as we are leaving.
leg 4 - short leg across the marshes - wind assisted to Hythe - not much to add - just flat and quiet.

Leg 5 just 32kms - back into the wind - Ed and unkown take on duties at the front, Jane and I lurk. Not as hilly as I expected.

Finish at 16.26 - fastest ever 300 for me - and that includes virtually 2 hours of stops -  just 12hrs 27 riding time.
Query to self --maybe I should deliberately choose to take on more food and fluid than I usually do -with lots of little stops.

Real thanks to Ed and Jane for their support - and to Ed for all his work on the front into the wind, as well as controlling the group early on , so that I could rejoin them on several occaisions.
