Title: Clapham Winter Weekend 2019 - 24th - 28th Jan
Post by: Wowbagger on 04 December, 2018, 05:40:25 pm
I'm proposing this as the sort of thing we did a couple of years ago.

The choice is the weekend  Thurs 24th to Mon 28th Jan or Thurs 31st Jan - Mon 4th Feb. They are obviously pensioners' weekends.

It's £18 pppn. Booking an entire dorm for 10 costs £180 so no point in doing that.

Please express a preference!

Previous thread here (https://yacf.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=93686.msg1978344#msg1978344), for those whose memories need a refresh.

Pocket anemometer on standby; I can do either weekend.

We are being evicted moving house by the 19th January. There is little chance that we will know which way up we are by either of those dates, but you never know. I'd like to make it.

Oh, there's a Clapham in London and its environs, isn't there? I was forgetting. I was, of course, referring to the Important One in Yorkshire. See also Kilburn and Richmond. :P

I suggest, given the absence of anyone stating a preference for one or other of the weekends, that we go for the second one and book our own places. This, hopefully, will give the Clariflies the opportunity to sort themselves out.

Bob, I will be very happy to accept your hospitality and drive up on the Thursday. IIRC it's steak night at the Gamecock in Austwick...

At the moment the preference is 2:1 in favour of the first weekend. The 1 was me. I don't mind which weekend it is. But - Bob, you say you have requested the second weekend but not had booking forms yet.

Can we make an executive decision at this point and stick with it? 1st Weekend! Everyone OK with that? ;)

I have the form on my computer as Sue emailed it to me.

Happy to go with the first week end but I did indicate second to Sue as I thought we were waiting for the Clalrionettes to see if they could come. The first week end it is then and will fill the form out accordingly. House is topsy turvey atm due to new carpet installs so no pc all day.

Email and response today.

Thanks Sue. We have decided to move it to the week before with at least two of us staying on the Thursday night as well. i.e. Thurs 24th Jan to 4th Feb. 28th Jan  (having had a vote to obtain a preferred week end). Will get a form in the post tomorrow and will sort the deposit by credit transfer.

regards

Bob

Unfortunately transport to Lancaster involves a combination of Northern Fail (who appear to be cancelling every 2nd train) & Virgin  :(    Or train to Clapham itself via Leeds, which is Northern Fail all the way.

You will remember part of the last ride was much flatter .....ahem nudge nudge... and included cafes. If you are feeling keen there is always that bastard hill at Settle. I think Alison (Littlewheel OTP) might be joining us, but if she dies I think she will be in her camper van with her small dog. But I'm not 100% sure she's coming. There's also an outside chance that Peli & Woolly might be around, but due to various things, their decision will be a late one and would almost certainly be for part of one day only.

But 4 will work.

Tomorrow's forecast for Settle is for a lot of snow and the temperature ranging from 2°C to -1°C. I think you can safely say that on the tops it will be quite a bit colder, and probably snowier, than in the town.

It looks as though it will warm up for the weekend, with some nice heavy rain all day Saturday. Sunday should be sunny with a maximum of 3°C.

I will get my mountain bike out of the garage later today and give it a "once over". I will also be bringing walking boots & poles. I think that taking a bike onto the tops could be challenging in a way he haven't experienced before.

The forecast for Ingleborough looks a bit exciting, too.

Challenging weather is traditional, no?  At least snow and ice makes for better Rule 9 photos than 50mph wind.

Subject to Plantar Faciitis I am up for a bit of walking. Getting up Long Lane if snow covered would be a bit too exciting however. There is a 4.5 mile waterfall walk at Ingleton which looks quite interesting dunno if snow rules that out. I think I might even have some waterproof overtrousers somewhere. I really should think about a mountain bike one of these days. I have swopped out the tourers tyres to 35mm knobblies. Grid ref app for the phone methinks. I seem to remember a very pleasant and lower level section towards the end of a Simeon led ride crossing ancient bridges etc when we stayed at the Dalesbridge, which may make a pleasant walk, .

Yesterday I got the mountain bike out of the garage, rubbed the mould off the saddle, pumped the tyres up and went or a 5 mile ride. I think it might be prudent to lube the chain, but otherwise it's fine. What wasn't fine was the fact that my expensive sealskinz gloves were that useless at 5°C that when I returned my hands were painfully cold.

I was aware that somewhere amongst my possessions is a pair of thickly knitted motor cycle mitten inners. I reckon I've had them since I was about 18. I haven't ridden a motor bike since the winter of 1975-76. Yesterday evening I had a sort-of look for them to see if they still existed. They do, and they haven't been eaten by moths. I reckon they will help if I put them over the top of some thinsulates or something.

Good question.  My bike is currently shod with Ice Spikers, which would seem completely unnecessary at this point, but I'm concerned about Sunday, and indeed Monday morning (I've got a 10:57 train out of Lancaster, so no hanging around waiting for the roads to thaw).

What you need at this time of year are retractable training wheels,  first sign of ice & down they go to make you nice & stable.  Might interfere with the panniers though....

At Lime St in plenty of time, but still wondering what I’ve forgotten to pack. You wouldn’t think I’ve been doing this for a couple of decades.
Today’s last minute hassles were breaking a lace on one cycling boot, then having to move all the bikes from the landing into the flat so engineers from a rival telecoms firm could get to the riser & run in some Cat 5.

   Will try to find the Sainsburys.   Minor hassle, my ticket was for the 11:38 from Wigan, the chap had reserved the bike on the 12:38.   Sorted with no problem by the helpful Virgin chap at Wigan, who has negative views on dangly bike spaces.

Not really, no.  It's a small village with limited access.
There area  couple of sites within a mile or two marked on the map.

Canardly and I enjoyed a very fine ride of 24 miles looping through Ingleton, Ribblehead, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, Austwick and back to Clapham. The weather was mild and grey with occasional drizzle. Kim and Andrew had been in the bar about an hour before we got back.

There is a wonderful old railway viaduct in Ingleton which used to carry a track which connected Clapham to the main line near Penrith.

Frosty ride to Lancaster this morning, with enough sheet ice to justify the studs I've been slogging along on all weekend.  Much better views than riding through the drzzly mist on Friday.

I made a rookie mistake with the train booking and this is a Super Voyager (dangly bike spaces) rather than a Pendolino (find a member of staff).  Means more faffing with luggage, as my bodgy rear rack doesn't have seperate rails for panniers and rack bag.

Fingers thawed out, feet a work in progress...

Home after a 10 hour journey. I think I stopped to charge 5 times, and also stopped at Canardly's to drop him off. I spent far longer than I intended at the final charge stop, Birchanger Green. When I arrived, both chargers were occupied, one by a PHEV that has a very slow charger, and a taxi. Another guy in a leaf was queueing. That was a right PITA, especially when I found that the taxi was there for 45 minutes and only loaded 7kwh. The Leaf charges 4 times as fast.

A great weekend in excellent company! Far too much alcohol was consumed... back on the wagon now.

Fans of my Sharknado series will be delighted.  I present Sunday's ride report in "So what actually happened at the weekend?" IRC logs style (I've trimmed out various comments and off-topic lines, and lightly edited for clarity):

 * kim and cycling have had an argument
<kim> yes.  yesterday's ride was a 11.3kph rolling average epic
<kim> it started out, as these things often do, with me telling canardly that his rear QR was undone
<kim> a couple of miles after that we got to the COR section, at which point he chickened out and very sensibly went back to the bunkhouse
<kim> we then proceeded up rather a lot of rocky Up, where i discovered that ice spikers at 60PSI don't grip properly on loose rock
<kim> there was also a ford where Nothing didn't happen
<kim> anyway, it being a nice day for a walk, we eventually got to the road again, and proceeded to malham via a 20% double-chevron extravaganza
<kim> which i impressed myself by being able to ride up, albeit in some ridiculous low gear.  this was a tactical error, because then i was waiting at the top in the 50mph winds
<kim> andrew caught up just after i'd resorted to huddling in the lee of a drystone wall like a sheep to keep warm
<kim> the ride into malham was wind-assisted
<kim> where the cafe was shut, citing 'january'
<kim> so we went to the pub, which was full of dogs and dog propaganda
<kim> and they lost our order due to PEBKAC
<kim> so a free round of compensatory pints later we were low on daylight
<kim> now, there are two routes from malham to settle.  one is a complete bastard of a hill, and the other is a slightly less bastardly approach to the same hill, but about 2km longer
<kim> i proposed the larrington manoeuvre, but wowbagger lead us up the steep one, presumably on account of signposts
<kim> (which strava infroms me i've previously climbed on the brompton, though i didn't realise at the time, because...)
<kim> ...the ludicrous wind was now a headwind
<kim> so the climb took god knows how long
<kim> when i eventually reached the top i decided to carry on into settle before my fingers got too cold to do brakes
<kim> this was the right decision, it was much less windy down there
<kim> 320 million years later andrew, and eventually wowbagger, appear
<kim> wow declares that he's had enough and what's more he badly needs the loo (see above re free beer), so goes off in search of a taxi
<kim> andrew and i finish the ride in darkness, spurred on with comedy battery warning blinkenlight from my cheap chinese MTB light
<kim> also, as i turned right to the bunkhouse, i was overtaken by a taxi...
<kim> (we declared it a draw, though wowbagger was clearly cheating)
<kim> and then this morning i rode to lancaster at -3C.

I expect someone will be along in due course with photos...

Point of (possibly too much) Information: the type of loo requirement involving only beer can be assuaged against a dry-stone wall with the wind behind you. This was a far more substantial matter.

I met Kim in the cafe at Sainsbury's & we took the Lune cycle route out of town and then a series of minor roads to Low & High Bentham, and thence over the fells to Clapham,  I was glad to have met her as I found that the sim card in my Garmin was the one for France & Holland, and therefore not much use for navigation.   We arrived at Clapham & I had tea & cake (I've just realised I didn't pay!) , then found Bob & Wowbagger in the bunkroom.    Some beers were consumed & a large amount of curry was ordered from http://www.ms-spices.co.uk (http://www.ms-spices.co.uk) in Ingleton.   As it was Burns Night some single malt also featured in the inebriations ....

The forecast for Saturday was for lots of rain , so after porridge & toast we piled into Wow's Leaf & scooted silently to https://whitescarcave.co.uk where we were issued helmets & led down into the stygian depths.  As the tallest of our party I think I suffered the most "Ow Fuck" moments in some of the 4ft high tunnels.   This was really interesting , but I'm not at all tempted to take up pot holing.  Cold, wet, dark..... I can get that on one of Wowbagger's rides....      The way the sedimentary rock had flowed had both Kim & myself  flashing back the the bit in "Aliens" where they are searching the nest in the atmosphere processing station, there was even a rock formation that looked like a Xenomorph....    Lots of other rude looking rock formations that would not be out of place in the CDC thread   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy5F8RYsyEA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zy5F8RYsyEA)

Exiting the caves we decided to visit Dent, so took the road up Kingsdale to Deepdale & then down to Dentdale,  I've done this before on the bike, with a camping load, I must have been fit in those days....

Lunch was taken at the Sun Inn http://www.suninndent.co.uk , and was well received by all.

We turned around & went back the way we came , and went shopping in Booth's in Settle.  I'm from Liverpool, we don't even have a Waitrose, so I was slightly gobsmacked & spent ££ on wine & cheese.

Back to the bunkhouse & we had a very boozy cheese & wine evening.   Kim was appointed "responsible adult" , but we still got through 3 bottles of red wine & about 1 1/2 bottles of single malt

For some reason we were up a bit late on the Sunday,  after breakfast we decided to go for a bike ride ...         It was colder than yesterday & very windy.   We had a nice tailwind at the start...

Easy road to Austwick and then to Helwith Bridge, where we stupidly rode past a warm Pubbe.  Over the railway line & we took a steep, rocky path upwards.  At this point Bob decided that discretion was the better part of valour, and retreated , with a departing cry of "you're all doomed!"   The path got steeper & rockier & the wind got windier & coldier.   We were walking for a lot of this , until it levelled out a bit at the top.

We rejoined the road at Sannat Hall Farm, and Kim showed she's not lost her racing fitness by powering up a 20% slope without stopping, the rest of us walked...

After regrouping we followed the insanely steep road down to Malham , you could smell the overheating brakes.    The cafe was closed, so we ended up in The Buck  http://thebuckmalham.co.uk (http://thebuckmalham.co.uk)  which was very busy,  so busy that they lost our order.  After righting this wrong & a round of free drinks it was quite late when we left.

Yes, I'm sure there was a Devil's Buttplug in there somewhere.  Also skulls, lots of skulls[1].

Interesting seeing it in colour like that.  Suspect the video's a bit over-saturated, but I found the lighting in the cave was frustratingly just below the level required to discriminate colour properly (in as much as I ever can).  I assume they were aiming for a balance between 'spooky cave' atmosphere and enough light to not trip over and be able to see the formations properly, and managed to achieve neither.  I decided that whipping my Petzl out would be bad from...

While the caves are well worth seeing I found the guided tour a bit frustrating.  The way I see it, if you're giving a talk about a cave, there's basically three things you can do:  a) a geology lesson  b) the human history of that particular cave  or  c) point out lots of rocks that look a bit like something SFW if you squint.  While I appreciate that (c) helps to keep things accessible to a mixed audience, I'd have liked a bit more substance.  I suspect the guy's delivery didn't help...

[1] I appreciate that human brains are hardwired to see faces in pretty much anything, but there really was no shortage of material for them to work with.

We rode to Kirkby Malham , and then turned uphill, we had a side wind, then a head wind.   Kim was in front, Wow behind & I was bringing up the middle.  We passed a fire in a field at the side of the road,  a pile of cut down branches was well ablaze.  The very steep descent into Settle was mitigated by the bastard wind blowing into my face ,  it was almost strong enough not to need the brakes .... almost....   A fire engine with blue lights on came speeding up the road,  perhaps to deal with the fire we'd seen earlier ?

In Settle we regrouped , and Wowbagger decided to find a loo & then get a taxi back to Clapham.   Kim & I pressed on into the night via Lawkland & Austwick , arriving at the bunkhouse at the same time as Wow.  Bob was there as well, looking suave in a chunky sweater.

A quick shower & Wow drove us to the Game Cock https://www.gamecockinn.co.uk/ , whose  food was as good as we remembered  :P

I actually had to pedal downhill at a couple of points at the start of the descent into Settle, lest I drop below stall speed.  Been a while since I had to do that.

As I was somewhat ahead of the group when I encountered it, the possibility that the fire engine was on its way to dig one of you out of a pile of drystone wall did occur to me...

Monday, was very bright, very sunny , very cold.  Thankfully the wind had gone.

Kim left early to catch her train,  the rest of us tidied up & packed our stuff away and then went our separate ways.

A lovely ride back to Lancaster , with good views over to the snow covered Lake District hills from the B6480 , there was still a fair bit of ice at the side of the road , and several patches where the road was completely covered , luckily my 2.25" tyres just sailed across.  Back into Lancaster & after a coffee & flapjack at the station I booked myself onto an earlier train and was home in Liverpool for 3ish.

Old age is creeping in. I forgot to take my Bidons.  ::-) For those that have not stayed there the hostel is a great venue and highly recommended, Sue remembered us from previous visits and we were made to feel most welcome. We had the place to ourselves once the bar had closed.

That track is 'orrible and the camera lies. Feeling somewhat worse for wear for reasons outlined elsewhere,  my cowardice knew no bounds having pushed the 35lb touring bike and pannier up the start of the track illustrated above, with arms extended. It must have been 20% in its early stages. After a time  my stomach was churning and my brain screaming that I would struggle greatly with the rest of the day's ride whcih included a double chevron or two, in addition to which, the wind was  becoming increasingly blustery and was forecast to become stronger later in the day. WCs came to mind with increasing persistence.  I don't think an MTB would have made any difference although disk brakes would have instilled more confidence.

Feeling much better after a  shower and a lie down, my therapy was concluded with the evening visit to the Gamecock which was as excellent as always.

I had, ridden over to Ingleton and Ribblehead with WB on the Friday which was really interesting. Most surprised to find that Ingleton had had a coal mine in the not too distant past and that it also possesses an amazing but redundant viaduct itself. The Cafe under the shadow of this viaduct on the road to White scar does a very fine long bacon roll. When we got to Ribblehead we popped into the Station Inn which is currently being refurbished, so I could obtain some water.  WB started sharing rugger memories with the landlord of the pub ( a rugger player) they quickly became great friends and between them seemed to be naming every rugby player since 1900. I had to bring them to order as time was moving on. Incidentally the pub's men's WC has a magnificent view.

Dentvale is simply breathtaking. The farm buildings along the vale still reflect the original layout of the Viking homesteads dating from the 9th  century. Dent station is for sale.

Wonderful week end in good company.

I emailed Sue offering to pay for the tea & cake.  She said she'd get me next time.

The bunkhouse is excellent , but next time I'll take a bread knife & corkscrew / bottle opener. These essentials were missing ! Luckily we had Kim & her trusty Swiss Army knife.

A toolbox full of plumbing equipment wouldn't be a bad idea, either...

My bold.
You travel without either?
It was the one item that I made sure that was always in my (wholly unrelated to cycling) tool kit when travelling to work in

I couldn't find my own SAK before I left.   My Topeak Alien multitool does have a bottle opener though.  When camping I usually do take a proper corkscrew.   It seemed outrageous though, the place is a bloody pubbe! Even Travelodges give you a bottle opener.

Seems the YACF winter week end weather fairy has been kind to us once again.

Whilst fishing around in the car today I discovered a chrome-coloured plastic bar-end plug which looks dangerously like one of Canardly's.
