How many islands have you cycled on?
« on: 09 May, 2022, 05:36:09 pm »
For me in order of frequency:
Britain (countless)
Wight (3 times)
Sheppey* (twice)
Mersea (twice)
Canvey (once)
Ireland (once)
Guernsey (once)
Foulness (once)
Afro-Eurasia** (2x France, 1x Spain, 1x India)

So either 8 or 9 :)

* I'm not counting the Isle of Thanet
** If this counts it's the large lump including "The Continent"
2019 🏅 R1000 and B1000

Crikey.  A lot of Scottish islands as well as Dutch and Danish ones.  Also Anglesey and Wight.

Let me think ...

...  I'd say more than 20 including such islands as Anglesey, Lismore, Tiree, Islay, Rousay, Papa Westray, Fetlar, Unst, Vlieland and Fano.  We're trying to nail it down now as you've got us thinking about it.

So, the one next door, Ile de la Cité
Shell Island (near Harlech)  <not actually an island - Ed>
Manhatten for a couple minutes on a mate's bike
Admission.  I'm actually not that fussed about cake.

How big do we class as an island and does it have to be permanent

If not then I'll start with the two bridges along witham riverwalk which back when I was a lad became island's when the river flooded and I cycled to them. Bottom bracket "coincidentally" failed weekend after

Other then that a couple of Orkney Isles.

Mersea island on several of occasions

This green and (un)pleasant isle

And of course you can count the black Isle despite it being a peninsula as has a bloody brilliant brewery and had a great pizza place (don't suppose you're local to that area are you?)

I never thought of Dordrecht as an island, it is?

So islands with a permanent bridge still count, but peninsulas with a narrow natural connection  to the mainland don't?

I think I'm a bit of an island hopper - of the ones already mentioned I have cycled on these:
Anglesey
Arran
Barra
Benbecula
Berneray
Britain
Burray
Canvey
Eriskay
Foulness
Fyn
Glimps Holm
Goeree-Overflakkee
Grain
Grimsay
Harris
Havengore
Hoeksche Waard
Ile de la Cité
Iona
Ireland
Islay
Lamb Holm
Lewis
L'ile Saint-Louis
Lindisfarne
Mersea
Mull
Noord-Beveland
North Uist
Orkney Mainland
Portsea
Schouwen-Duiveland
Sjaelland
Skye
South Ronaldsay
South Uist
Thanet
Torre
Unst
Vatersay
Wallasea
Westray
Wight

And I think new to the thread:
Aranmore (IE)
Rathlin
Holy Island (Wales) - or is that just covered by Anglesey?
Colonsay
Oronsay
Coll
Shetland mainland
Yell
Bressay
Ameland (NL)
Ile de Re
St Marys (Scillies)
Alderney
Langeland (DK)
Samsø (DK)
Amager (DK)
Lolland (DK)
Ærø (DK)
Tåsinge (DK)
Fehmarn (DE)

Plus I think quite a few more of those Dutch "islands" - I'm not really sure on the definition of those.

My island count is pretty low compared to some here.  Clearly I need to make it a goal of my next tour to ride as many as possible!

Britain
Ireland
Iceland
Grimsey (not the same as Grimsay!)
Honshu
Hokkaido
Shikoku
Kyushu
Hong Kong
Coloane
Singapore
Oahu
Vancouver Island

It was a hire bike and the brakes were purely ornamental.

Ooooh yes, we did that too as kids (well I was probably a 'young adult'); up to one end then down to the other, and back to the post office/bike hire/everything else place.  I don't remember the brakes!
Think it possible that you may be mistaken.
