Title: On St Lucys`s Eve 200
Post by: jamesld8 on 07 December, 2015, 04:37:15 pm
Anyone else looking to ride this? Weather looks (compared to recent) quite promising with an increasing SW wind during day >>>good tailwind home to Prees

I've declared an interest in riding it, to get a 200 in during December.  I know it's a 'main roads' audax, but I may take the minor road from Corwen
to the end of Bala Lake unless there is a control somewhere along the route.

Looking at the calendar page it appears there's just the 1 control, at the turn!

I do fancy it especially with the forecast of kinder weather. Getting to Whitchurch is going to be a bit of a challenge though.

That sounds quite a good idea, using the Llandrillo road then around to Llanuwchllyn on south side Bala lake? adds about 5 km each way though

"Getting to Whitchurch is going to be a bit of a challenge though."

I've booked in at the Crewe Barthomley Travelodge (£34), which is about 30-minutes drive to the start. An 08:00 am start time means I don't have to get up too early.

I'm contemplating doing this, weather permitting, will be driving down from Rochdale early Saturday morning.

Will probably be slow as not much cycling done lately, treating as a bike ride, rather than an Audax though.

Just measured it, and it's +1.7 Kms each way.

I'll be on it (unless the weather takes a turn for the worse).

I did this ride last year and despite being main roads, they were particularly quiet and enjoyable.  A stark contrast to how they'd be in the summer months when full of holiday traffic.

Plenty of opportunities to stop for a mince pie or two along the route.  We stopped at the coffee shop at the Corwen workhouse on the way out and then a break in Llangollen on the return leg.  Not forgetting of course the full english at the start and a decent lunch at the control!

Looking forward to it, looks like it's going to be a little warmer this time around...

No need to worry, I've just signed up for this one, and the sun always shines for me - we can throw the weather forecasts away. Disclaimer: Not always true. My first December Audax, hope it's not the first ride in a RTTY series. Happy days.

Is there a whiff of sarcasm there Mr. PX Paul? , I was only trying to motivate. We're doomed..... That's better.

PS.  I'm bringing along my new Planet X stem - it's very shiny.

Ha ha.  Yes, there was a bit.  I still think were in for a drubbing off the weather, and your 'doomed' scenario is probably more likely.

Planet X is the way forward.  You just need the rest of the bike now to match your stem

because it look like being 10 hours of heavy rain as the mild air pushes north against colder air---rain, rain and rain :(

The weather forecast is a slightly improved this morning - but still miserable. The 40mph gusts have gone and the lighter winds are now set to change direction about midday, giving us a mild tailee in both directions  :), but still continuous heavy rain through to mid afternoon - and flood warnings. What a difference a day makes!
I daresay most are considering their options. If you could make your decision sooner rather than later and email me if you're not coming I'd be grateful -
The event will go ahead even if just for a single rider.

I won't be coming on this event, I've not emailed my intent to John as I was watching the weather and was going to make my mind up today, decided to ride to Blackpool yesterday which was half this distance and packed at the half way point (Blackpool) so probably a good decision in the end. Hope the weather isn't too bad for all who will be riding, looking forward to your post ride reports.

I pulled out too.  Waited until Friday evening before deciding.

Referring to yesterdays forecast, the thought of getting a soaking in the morning and then, what would feel like, freezing for the rest of the day didn't float my boat.  Then I look this morning and the forecast has changed again for a soaking all day!

Really disappointed, but considering doing it as a DIY when the opportunity arises.

Thanks to John of course for organising the event.

well done, wasn`t it windy too? had tremendous gusts in mid Wales, near gale force at times; went to walk up to Elan valley dams, WOW water crashing over dams, spray blowing everywhere, for me made right decision to not cycle though. DIY sounds an interesting idea but would have be a w/e  wouldn`t it due to weekday traffic?

It was windy, rather stiff before the turn. Useful on the return when cold wet muscles were failing badly. Great ride despite the suffering, roads relatively quiet and both cafes excellent. Thanks John.

Controller's kit for 6 hours on rain-lashed Raven Cafe bomb-site car park:-

1. Figgy pudding (remains only)
2. Regular cups of "coffee".
3. Spicy ginger cordial to welcome riders.
4. Harmonica to do same to John Perrin, with on the move version of "Silent Night".  (Ukulele deemed too dangerous after dark.)
5. Book of mawkish but seasonal tales to while away the hours waiting for riders to pour themselves home.
6. Coloured lights to be colourful.

Well done, everyone!

BUMP!

St Lucy's Brevet  200km    Saturday 10th December 2016

Same deal as last year. Entry on the line.  Just send me an email if you're coming - and another if you later change your mind. Then just turn up at The Raven between 7 and 8am on Sat' 10th December with the right money - three pound coins.

BUT

The event is not on the Calendar - because I've been idle and missed the deadline - So I'm in the process of setting it up as a group perm.

This makes no difference to riders except that your card will be a perm card.
It does make a difference to me in that I have to rely on this post and word of mouth to get the message out. Any help/support in that way would be much appreciated :P

So, is anyone riding this on Saturday then, or is it just JP all on his own?  Sorry, JayP.  I can't make it, sadly, although my latest RRTY campaign would suggest that this would be a good idea.  For the time of year, the weather looks OK with a following wind for the return leg.

Shortbread is excellent Audax food....

I recall the Only For Softies 600 in 2011.  Day Two about 7am and I'm flagging.  Myself and Eck pull into a petrol station in Grangemouth. A packet of shortbread, a strong coffee and a spicy chicken pastie later and I'm feeling like a million dollars.  I credit the shortbread.

I recall bonking out in northern Sweden, realising we were short on fuel, sharing shortbread with my travelling companion who said:
'So you think, with all our education, we have just not realised we needed to EAT?'
'That's right.'
And off we pedalled to the Arctic Circle...

Make of it what you will. I'm not cancelling .It's your decision. There are still 20 who haven't pulled out. I'll be at the Raven with the cards in the morning and I'll be riding. Alismed will be at Dolgellau, to stamp cards, and Peter & Torslanda will be at the finish.

You've not adjusted the start time to Saturday on a couple of them JayP, hence the difference. I did toy with doing this again but just haven't got the mojo this year

Just to confirm, does anyone know, is there just the one control?

I’m quite looking forward to this, in a type 2 fun kind of way...

Unless JayP has drastically changed it from the last two editions, yes just the one in Dolgellau, but plenty of other cafe's on route.

Sorry guys but I'm a DNS due to weather forecast and not having suitable tyres.
Have fun and stay safe.

I’m wavering. Shropshire cops were advising against non essential travel earlier. I've gotta drive through Shropshire to get there and it does start there!

Any locals able to give any advice/ update?

John

ETA.
I’ve wavered, I’m a DNS.

I’ve been looking at webcams and it’s too gnarly for me. Luckily I finished my RRTY last month!! Was hoping to rock on through, but looks like I’ll (hopefully) start again in Jan, unless I can sneak one in next week...

Will email now.

Good to hear you got round, how many turned up?
Would I have managed on 23c 4 seasons?

Actually it was a good job I dns'd as one of the living room radiator valves decided to leak around 3:30 pm and I had to get a new one from B&Q and replace it before we were flooded! Perhaps it wasn't meant to be for me.

Well done all who did it.

83% DNS = 5 riders .... but they  all finished.

The worse the weather the bigger the smiles. ;D

Thanks Alison and Paul for looking after them at Dolgellau.

Unfortunately at the last minute Peter was unable to attend so I spent  14hrs loitering on the Raven car  Park

Thanks for the feedback oggy and the pictures John, gives me a flavour of what I missed, appreciated.

I actually bought a pair of conti double fire 3 tyres for the thorn raven on Friday afternoon and was frantically trying to fit them. They were rubbing the fork crown at less than half inflated. Going back on Monday. My rear 4season 23c  on the Ribble is rather flat on the crown and I wasn't sure how it would be on the slushy stuff and Icy patches I was anticipating.
This ride is on my list of rides to do.

Saturday 8th December 2018 St Lucy's Brevet (group-perm') 200km

Usual deal- I'll be breakfasting at The Raven Cafe  Prees Heath nr Whitchurch Shropshire at 7am on Sat' 8th with a stack of perm' cards - so if you decide to ride at last minute, you send me an email to say you're coming, then just turn up and I'll enter you on the line (£3). Route sheet, gpx and, if you prefer to weather watch and 'seize the day',  pre-entry via Paypal are here . http://www.aukweb.net/perms/detail/JPE07/

If you've not heard of this before the note below from the route-sheet should give you the idea, -  or read the thread above.

'This event is designed to offer the best chance for a safe December 200km
It's a simple out and back ride with one intermediate control only. It starts and finishes at Prees Heath (The Raven Cafe opens 7am and Prees F&C cafe closes 11pm) and turns at Dolgellau (Cafe Ty Bwyta Da). There are lots of cafes in between at Llangollen, Corwen and Bala The route is all on quiet A roads (ie gritted) and the navigation is very easy.

Good lights are essential. Make sure you and your bike are all hi-vis’d up.

We’re OK to park (all day) at the Raven. They just want us to park along the extreme perimeter opposite the Cafe entrance. This is so that passers-by don’t get the idea that the cafe is very busy when actually it isn’t.  Of course they’re
expecting us to breakfast with them'

Forecast is looking reasonable at this (early) stage, so unless that changes dramatically we'll be along at the Raven for this year's outing.
