Folding dining chairs
« on: 16 February, 2020, 05:51:26 pm »

Having managed to kill 2 dining chairs out of 4 during a single game of DnD. I'd love to replace them with something folding so it's easier to store them when not in use.

Has anyone found nice folding chairs that are comfortable to sit on for a few hours? I've tried the IKEA ones, but they all lack in one way or another.

Any recommendations?

Yeah, those Ikea folding dining chairs are a work of Stan: Uncomfortable, and after a bit of use develop a wobble that Lynn Faulds-Wood would probably describe as a "potential death trap".

Yeah, they are clearly built down to a price.

I'm pondering which is better, folding chairs I can store out the way, or chairs that stack and don't take up more than the footprint of a single chair... The latter are more durable, but take up more space...

Stacking chairs can get damaged when incorrectly stacked (so the legs are not in line, for instance) but this is probably less likely when done by a few people, owner and friends, compared to stacking in a mass scenario.

The only person who would be stacking them would be me, so shouldn't be a major issue.

A stack of stacked stacking chairs is probably more stable than a pile of folded folding chairs leaning against each other. Not that I have any specific chairs to recommend though.

Yeah, except folding chairs can be slid behind things, stored behind doors, hung on the wall etc...

True. You know the layout of your place and what would fit best.

Spend some time wandering around (free) places in Amsterdam that use such chairs,  find something comfy & durable , then hope it's got a label on & the maker sells direct to the public ?

If they are only for occasional use would folding camping chairs do the job  ? https://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-817775-camping-chairs#product_8387457

Shall see if I find anything when out and about in the coming weeks.

Unfortunately not. They fall apart way too quickly. Have tried them at a previous flat.

You might also look at directors chairs, wood and canvas, I find them comfortable, though not everyone does.  I had a pair as my only chairs for some years, gave them away when I had more room, wish I hadn't, though I still get to sit on them from time to time. I think they came from Habitat, though it was 30+ years ago so unlikely they bear much resemblance to anything in the current range.  Weren't cheap even then, I've replaced the canvas once, though that was for aesthetic reasons.

Are they high enough for a typical dining table?

Probably 80mm lower, easily sorted with a cushion.

being a cyclist, if you do get director's chairs, it would presumably be rude not to have 'directeur sportif' writ upon at least one of them....?

cheers

I bought a couple of these from Argos and they seem sturdier than other wooden ones I've had in the past. Plenty of colour options too. I put some IKEA chair cushions on them and they are comfy enough.
