From Andy Pandy To Zebedee: The Golden Age Of Children's Television.  BBC4, on iPlayer.  A nostalgia-fest for those of us of a Certain Age but also quite interesting, and not just learning that TV's Chris Packham had nightmares about "The Singing Ringing Tree" into his twenties or that Mr Rusty off "The Magic Roundabout" was clearly a proto-hipster:

A hipster, yesterdayMr Rusty

Didn't have the classic Camberwick Green opening sequence with PC McGarry DCI Hunt kicking in a nonce and because it's the BBC it didn't have Jenny Hanley either chiz but there are Clangers.

The second half of And Then There Were None for me I think.

Although I know the story backwards, it's interesting to see the different productions

I often find the Marple-type Agatha Christies twee and tedious - this is in another league.

(but clashes with the Homeland finale, which takes precedence over just about anything :) )

It's a bit earnest, isn't it? I expect a good dose of camp in Agatha Christie. And fewer F-bombs. Aidan Turner with his shirt off though, eh? Phwoar!

Better than the deathly dull Dickensian though.

The men have been washing up and Looking for Cables.
The women have been watching Ten little names changed.

The men didn't find the right cable. I think I need a Cable Chest and a database.
It is simpler than it looks.

The considered verdict on "Harry Price: Ghost Hunter" is that it had the bollocksometer deep in the red zone from the first advert break onwards.  They are clearly angling to get a series commissioned, a sort of 1920s X-Files ::-). Good luck with that.

Neil Spring, who wrote the book on which it was based, is a Jolly Nice Chap but even so...

Edit: Dr Larrington reports that Neil Spring is tweeting "Yay! Series in the offing!"

Not being familiar with Mrs Christie's "And Then There Was Nonse" I quite enjoyed the twist as I thought the Pretty Young Gel and the Smouldering Fenian would unmask the murderer in the last five minutes.  Still, at least it allowed me to crack the joke about the right to arm BEARs last night and yea, and verily, Dr Larrington did hit me.  We did feel them was some rather anachronistic dialogue though, picky buggers that we are.

Disappointed that Lady Carmichael did't ask Sir Eustace "what's the matter, darling?" but that's been par for the course with Tim McInnerny since 1989.

That is a VERY cryptic reference sir!

Well, yeah, fair review. But the last section was still pretty good if you enabled "dont care that none of this makes any sense" mode for 15mins.

(click to show/hide)

the dialog in the first half was just fantastic. I think they allowed themselves a little more silliness and self-parody, as it's a christmas special. More of that please!

Bah! And moreover, Humbug!  Methinks some forumites might be inspecting their own fundaments from the inside.

Lighten up, folks, it's a Christmas Special!  I found it thoroughly entertaining.  Was it perfect?  Of course not.  But what telly is?
I give it 9/10.

Just watched Sherlock.  Delightfully silly.  My lurgy-addled brain isn't sure whether it actually made sense, but that didn't make Duane Dibbley any less funny either, so I don't think I care.

Why? There's been a lot of "if you didn't enjoy it you must be humourless and/or stupid" on social media, but the simple fact is that it was just... dull.

I found the steady stream of self-congratulatory in-jokes tedious to the point of distraction. It might have been more entertaining had Moffat spent less time showing off how clever he is. I don't mind a convoluted plot, but this was actually just convoluted storytelling of an inanely simplistic plot.

Gatiss eating himself to death for a bet was amusing though. Andrew Scott is always good value too.

I hear the ending featured a man explaining feminism to a murderous suffragette cult in purple kkk outfits. Sounds amazing. Almost wish I'd stuck with it.

Anyway, looking forward to being equally disappointed by War & Peace tonight.

War and Peace, Deutschland 83 and the new Welsh language (with sub-titles, I hope) political thriller Byw Celwydd all starting at 9 tonight.  Then French political thriller Spin starting later this week. I must check how much space we have left to record stuff. Might have to clear a couple of Hinterlands this afternoon.

S4C m'lud. So not available via an aerial, but Murdochvision has it on 134 and Virginmeeja have it on 166.  Or presumably over t'intarwebs.

Edit: What I should have written is "not available via an aerial for people dwelling outside of Wales, eg Mr Larrington."
