Greater spotted woodpeckers drumming in the park today - at least, one drumming and when another appeared, they went off together...

07:15 HOURS, just twilight, Robin, Dunnock and Song Thrush do think its Spring (and not just around the corner  ;)

Also noted rooks building nests in spinney just off A5 near Cerrigydrudion, which at probably 1000ft asl is very early I`d think ?

Some daffodils in flower. I reckon, even after the ridiculously mild weather we have had throughout most of the winter, they are only about a fortnight earlier than usual.

Bit of a pause in Spring here now, sleety showers  and snow down on hills to 1000ft asl. But our daffodils and primroses in flower as well as red hellebores in garden.

I suppose that means we'll get them soon; I see I reported one on 16 February last year...

I keep looking at the geese through the kitchen window1 and wondering whether they are building their nests yet?  Tradition/folklore has it that they lay their first eggs of the season on Valentine's Day (though mine have never yet done so within a week of the 14th).

1 (Begs the question - what are the geese doing in my kitchen?)

The trees in a distant suburban garden appear to be in blossom: one pink and one white.

At least 8 of these busy splashing in a 600 dia / 300 deep garden pond (aka 'the lake'), & masses of spawn.

I heard my first skylark of the year, near Pocklington yesterday (so still a fair way south of here).

Couple skylarks singing yesterday in the 13c warmth; BUT a rapid hold on Spring today at 4c and heavy squally snow storms driven on by a 40mph gusting NW wind. Even so a great tit singing clearly in it all

First goose egg of the year yesterday, and a whopper too!  A fortnight later than they've ever been before!  I wonder if they'll carry on later into the summer because of the late start?

A couple bumblebees enjoying the nectar of our winter flowering heather. Dawn chorus now at 6 am, and birds singing joyfully during daytime; female blackbird gathering moss / grasses for nest material. And , hopefully , in a week or so a chiffchaff will arrive  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

First yellowhammer of the year singing this morning - still a sub-song, missing out the long final note.
A couple of nuthatches singing long, liquid trills.
My first skylark on the way home.
Lots of (wild of course) primroses in the reserve (Snitterfield), plus an apparently new site for wild daffodils. Snitterfield churchyard was carpeted in primroses, which I'm inclined to consider wild, though without evidence.
On yesterday's ride, the wild daffodils on the south-facing slopes along the ridge north of Meriden have opened up nicely - about a third in bloom. I spotted a small patch in a place I was previously unaware of; time to pass on the sighting to the Wildlife Trust's records (aiui, probably a central register which the Trust has access to)
