Title: Today is Thursday.
Post by: Beardy on 30 April, 2020, 11:39:29 am
This has been a public service announcement for those, like myself, who have been finding it difficult to keep track of the days.

As you were.

Yes, but which Thursday? Is this the 2rd or 3nd Thursday of this week?

I'm still annoyed that 2 weeks ago the week had 3 Tuesdays in it. I never did work out where Monday went...

Mondays are being held in reserve until everyone goes back to work, at which point there'll be at least two months of nothing but, weekends included.

Something to look forward to.

Thursday again.** Bin day tomorrow.*

*Check locally for details.
**Be aware that for some, this might be the first Thursday. In which case, welcome to Thursday! We're sure you'll have a great day in Thursday. Also be aware that due to time zone differences, for you this might be Wednesday or Friday. This will also be the case if you're reading this tomorrow or yesterday. In which case, happy time travel!

It's also Ascension, which is a holiday in France, ditto in Germany where it's rather sweetly called Christi Himmelfahrt.  The polis here are merrily lying in wait for 4-day-weekend travellers alighting from trains, hoping to catch those who break the 100km limit and relieve them of 135€.

I always get this mixed up with Assumption, which is Maria Himmelfahrt. I think that's in June. Then again, I might be thinking of Corpus Christi. Going to have to look these up now!

Corpus Christi is next Thursday (between The Ascension and Pentecost/Whitsun.
The Assumption is August 15th

And today is green bin day here (it used to be Monday, but they've changed it since they restarted green collections after the initial lockdown when they were cancelled).
Not that we have a green bin, but I was treated to the site of the wagon reversing done the road outside my 'office' this morning. Glad I don't have to do that manoeuvre.

We have a blue bin for recyclables and an orange one for the rest. Actually, we have two orange ones, a gift from the council when we moved in here 30 years ago. With kids & in-laws gone we only need one, so the other served for years as a water butt.  One year, when it was full of rain water, we had a bloke in to do some fencing work. When he was taking his pay he said "oh, that bin of yours: it was full of water so I emptied it for you and left it down flat".

Thursday is bin-day for us. We also had a diary entry for a phone call, involving us, Jan's sisters and our Melbourne daughter. That used up a couple of hours this morning/evening, depending which end of the phone you were on.

Today is Not Thursday. Instead, it's Bank Moliday Honday. But why? It's annoying when the bakery is shut but I've got to work anyway!

(just to be clear, the annoying this is the bakery being shut, depriving me of baked treats, not me working)

It's not a bank holiday Monday it's a Glasgow Holiday, the east coast is open*, the west coast is shut.

Since they were outsourced our binmen have to work Bank Holidays as per normal days.
Title: Re: Today is Thursday.
Post by: Cudzoziemiec on 25 May, 2020, 12:50:04 pm
Ours seem to have been doing that since they were insourced. That is, since the council took the contract back from the commercial outfit that cocked it up before. Although you can never be entirely sure; they'll collect on Good Friday or Friday VE Day (our day is Friday) but then delay till the following Monday after a week beginning with a BHM.

In all seriousness I have no idea when it's a bank holiday or local holiday here.
The list at work covers the 3 council areas but that's just Dundee, Perth and (I think) Arbroath holidays.

We should probably have moved on from the burgh holidays at regionalisation in 1974, it was bad enough having to make a hasty retreat to the dinner hall at school when discovering it was a St Andrews holiday, but the madness of having the whole country off on the same days mah too far...

I was on the phone to my The Boss today to discuss my impending unfurloughment.  He apologised that he didn't call yesterday as planned but "got his days muddled up."  I pointed out that I, as the furloughed one, was living a structureless life and he, still working, should really know which day it is.

I have the opposite problem. I might, or might not have started my new job yet, and my new boss (or not) is on furlough. I've not spoken to him, but with a thirteen month old baby I doubt he knows what day it is. Still, I put a tick in the box for the old boss for end of year review.

I keep thinking it's Saturday and then realizing it's Friday. That's be nice if I were still working because then I'd still have a complete weekend ahead but being retired, who cares?

Come to that, Monday's a holiday here, being Pentecost.  Not that I'm religious or anything but Catholic countries are great for having bunched-up holidays, and May is the best month of the lot.

Right im confused.

Do I need to
a) head out on the bike
Or b) phone the boss and apologise for sleeping in and not being at work?

Either way I think I'm going to go and see if St Andrews is carnage.

You know what's going to happen with that? It'll get contracted to Thursdeve. Over time this will become First Eve and taken to refer to the Biblical creation of mankind on the sixth day, which proves the week actually begins on Saturday, and therefore Thursday is actually on Tuesday. Which I think we knew all along.

On the other hand, it might become First Steve, which would be good to wind up those annoying fundamentalists who like to say "Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve".

Being self employed I normally don't work  on my birthday , but I have been helping a mate out since lock down . So today I have  shuttering to strip and a bay to prepare . Three of us have got 7.5 m3  of rapid set scrap yard mix concrete to lay  . The next bay to excavate and hard core . Then I am off to my own job to strip then erect scaffolding . Well they reckon hard work never killed any one .

I remember on-line timesheets, and the frantic scrabble for job codes that would accept hours without adverse budget implications.  The high-stress point of the week.  Project managers who wanted your input but were not prepared to give you a job code.  I'm glad that's all behind me....

It's not so bad at the moment, I have a full time secondment so it all goes on one project, I just have to divi it up between the different sub project tasks. The nice bit is the project file structure is based on teh task number so if the PM wants any input saved to the working folder they have to give me the task code.
