I did not know though that you can also get stripy-knee-length versions
Back in my student days (a long time ago) I used to wear something like those (maybe not quite knee length but definitely stripy). They worked nicely with my "Jesus sandals" (something like this, made of water buffalo leather and a bit smelly, but not so much as the "Afghan" coats also popular around the same time)
Sorry we are going off topic but I blame OD for showing us the socks!

Not just stripy, knee length socks... you need individual toes as well.  Its all about detail!

Of course they had toes - that was essential for those sandals!

I never got on with waterproof socks when I was commuting 22 miles each way across the Fens.  IME Sealskinz are poorly fitting and leak terribly.

I found that after a while I perforate the waterproof membrane at the big toe.

But they're unsuitable for cycling in, other than to ward off frostbite, because of the way they accumulate sweat (an hour or two of that makes your feet a really special kind of minging).  A thick woollen sock is better, even when saturated, as at least that dries out.  They're also expensive and annoying to dry.  I wouldn't want to use them as a commuting solution.

They're fine for walking through wet grass on campsites, though.

Waterproof boots are better for riding in, and if you're actually going to be standing in snow/puddles.

Sandals: they annoy people!
And if you wear socks, they annoy people more!

What's not to like!

I have two matching pairs of cycling shoes, so that I have a dry pair when one pair has got soaked cycling to work.

However, I seem to destroy overshoes and waterproof socks. The drying room at work is shut due to covid.

I am resoundingly fed up of putting on wet shoes to come home.

Dear panel, should I just buy some SPD sandals and be done with it*

D.

* Honestly, this is not a pisstake, I am fed up of wet shoes that take days to dry.
I was going to suggest the hand-dryers in the gents, but most of them are a bit rubbish.

** Status Report **

I now own a pair of SPD sandals, and have fitted the cleats. I intend to wear them tomorrow on the commute, photos will be forthcoming.

The socks are still in progress.

** report ends **

They are very lovely sandals, and quite.... stiff.

For serious winter cycling (no idea on temperature, just know the water bottles would freeze solid with hours still to ride) I found my SPD sandals to be the best thing to wear.
Mainly because they have lots of adjustment, so liner socks, thick merino socks, long sealskinz socks would all fit nicely without cutting off my circulation and getting cold feet through that. Then waterproof covers over the whole lot. With goretex overtrousers stopping water going down the top of my socks, I never suffered wet feet. Goretex boots always seemed to fill with water eventually.
