Stick a rubber glove on your head and say you're a Tralfamadorian Penguin disguised as a chicken.

step 1:  Glue two danish pastries to an alice band (alice band the same colour as your  hair) -
step 2: weat the above alice band
step 3: Wrap a white sheet around yourself

and hey Presto one Princess Leia

Worked for me, until a relative tried to eat one on the Danish pastries. Unbeknown to him, at that point, was that I'd varished them to stop them flaking1. He quickly realised  ;D

Earth2 didn't bother spending much on costumes either: -

Pyjamas, a  Dressing gown and a towel - say you're Arthur Dent

That was how I looked for several years. Comes highly recommended.

Dr Who spent several years stuck on Earth in an army base, with a coat and a long scarf, IIRC.
(Not a fan of fancy dress either.)

Tall, thin cardboard box covered in gloss black paint. Give J a bone to throw in the air.

How about a nice police outfit

Whilst I've been cycling past one of the Forbidden Planet shops for the last three years, I didn't realise that there's a Dr Who shop in London!
Actually, it is rocket science.

Fatigue trousers, sidearm, grey vest, olive drab vest, hexagonal dogtags == BSG (upgrade version)

Wow, you're all great. Though I'm having to google most of this to work out what it's about!

Oh, that reminds me, if you want a relatively simple female Dr Who themed arrangement, which shouldn't be that hard to find bits for, you could do the Doctor's Daughter.

Basically a dark green top, dark trousers, a heavy military looking belt, and some sort of large gun (suitably plastic from your local toy shop!)

Oooh, now that looks possible! She's very cute, and blonde, and young, though - I hope it'll be dark!

Didn't stop me having a thing for the grey Hazel O'Connor look-alike though (Gigi Edgley, so Wikipedia tells me)

I can understand that!

My Christmas present form my brother is a weekend at SFX-3

We had a conversation last year about things we hadn't done, and I (foolishly) said that I had never been to a SCiFi Convention!

I am NOT dressing up though.

I'd go as a replicant from Bladerunner as the who point of them is that they look like normal folk and I wouldn't have to dress up.

You're trying to make her go out in public wearing nothing but a bra, a see through plastic mac and a pair of f**k me boots?
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Now the helpful answer

Have a look at Last exit to nowhere

Lots of T-Shirts that with  suitable fatigues (as above) would make a crew outfit for many spaceships.

Alternatively inspired by the above post for Trilian, Arthur Dent can be cheaply sourced from charity shops and gives you an excuse to drink lots of beer and eat lots of peanuts!

Or River Song - dark jeans and boots, a shirt tucked in, and a massive gun.

My fancy dress costume of choice is Buffy.

ZERO effort! Five minutes with the hair straightners, strappy top, and you're done.

Buffy's hardly Sci Fi, though is it?

I mean, you'd have to start thinking about the vampire population of Sunnydale, the rate of slaying and how often they need to feed and so on.  The numbers simply don't add up, even if you assume Sunnydale is endothermic.  Or something...

Quote from: The Introduction
Sunnydale is big.  Really, vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big.  I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to Sunnydale.

Or something...
