Black Squirrels

Just seen one. I had no idea such a creature existed, but a quick Wiki search tells me they are quite common, albeit in the south of England, having descended from zoo escapees there.

They occur in a number of other places, can be due to melanism as wel as various sports

Yes - we saw a black "red" squirrel in France somewhere.  I think the ones here are mostly melanistic greys

You get white/albino sports as well.

We saw a black shqrl in Franconia last summer. It ran across the road in front of me and disappeared into what looked like mourners arriving for a wake. Shpooky.
Having seen a red a couple of hours earlier I assume it was a dark variant of the red.
Do not clench. It only makes it worse.

Red squirrels bleach to very pale brown if they are in the sun a lot.

Yes, the Wikipedia page said there are as many blacks as greys around Letchworth. Genetic tags suggest they are American black squirrels which escaped from a local zoo.
