Here's the wind forecast for the next few days: -
http://xcweather.co.uk/GB/forecast

Tomorrow is definitely a day to be riding NE. The wind swings West and calms rather a lot on Friday

I guess this was the accident spot: https://www.strava.com/activities/241058971/analysis/1282/1343 (streetview)

I reckon so.

A small blip on the HRM.  Probably a good job he wasn't wired for sound!

I'd missed that: https://www.strava.com/activities/241058971/analysis/1275/1352
Sudden jump of about +20 bpm at same time as sudden deceleration from 25km/h to ~0. Yep that' it.

TIL: Steve has a lower HR falling off his bike than I do when getting onto my bike.

Yes, good detective work the exact spot.
I shouted to Steve that sharp corners dropping down, were coming up and went ahead, but as the roads were dry so far that morning and wind was behind us the ice was totally unexpected.

Sheet black ice, was even difficult to stand up. So glad Steve was OK. We stopped for a pee and quick bike check over and walked the corners. Not wanting to disrupt Steve's progress I convinced him I was OK and sent him on his way, I knew I was in big trouble.
I've badly  cracked my hip socket and have 8 weeks of bed rest to look forward too, just have to console myself that I took one for the team.  :-[

My TCR and PBP double attempt might be a touch harder this year.

really sorry hear that and very best wishes quick recovery ;
It`s getting dodgy outside again this morning here (Welsh borders) with all the overnight rain starting to freeze up on wet surfaces as temp now near to zero so hope that this doesn`t spread East too soon

There are several folk doing quite a bit to help Steve but I'm pretty sure you are ahead of the pack. Nobody else has broken bones for him. Heal well!

Ouch! That is a lot worse than I thought. Are you off your bike for two months, do we need to re-route all pub rides via Ringstead and bring you beer?  ;)

Best wishes from China,
Noel

Ouch! and you cycled back home after that.  You're a tougher man than me.  Hope you don't get too much discomfort during the mending process.

That's definitely taking one for the team!

Hope it heals fast. Don't overdo effort in the recovery.

Oh good lord, sorry to hear this. Amazing show of stoicism in telling him to go on in such circumstances, don't know if I could have done the same.

And highlights just how easy it would be for one bit of ice to thwart Steve's entire year. <Thinking happy thoughts for you both.>
