I believe it is a reference to a (possibly fictional) Russian submariner, m'lud, and his habit of abrupt changes of course to shake off the pursuing surface vessels. Or something.

I hope he rides through till midnight, retires to a hotel and doesn't ride tomorrow. He'll probably get on his bike again though.

Perhaps somebody from his team will do the right thing.

One year I had to ride Dec 31st to keep my Randonneur Round the Year going and it did worry me quite a lot - the thought of a bunch of drunks on the road that evening.

I hope Steve doesn't encounter a second motorised drunkard in 2015.

My son & I had a 'traditional' post midnight ride for a few years - it was remarkably quiet and calm on Leicester's suburban roads.

I take it those roads didn't go through Braunstone or Highfields then. Pretty busy after midnight if I recall ;-)

LFE, Kirby Muxloe, some years out to to Thurlaston Ford!
