I saw someone employing this braking technique for the first time the other day.  From the level of skill and the state of their shoe, they'd obviously been using it for a while.

I'd only come across the shoe-on-front-tyre and shoes-on-tarmac (the saddle is usually set low enough to facilitate this) variants before.

I nearly got run over by someone using shoe-on-front-tyre whilst he was riding on the pavement t'other day.  Although I myself resorted to shoes on tarmac (well, gravel) on the KTTR ride, having dropped off the saddle in order to reach.  Admittedly this was because my brake cable snapped halfway down a rather steep hill....

Foot-on-rear-tyre is something I saw in Swindon a few years ago.  The BMX kids do it because (I suppose it's like fixies) they don't want to spoil their machines' clean lines with a brake.  It seems reasonably effective, and the fact that you can hang your bum right out over the rear wheel of a BMX no doubt helps with grip.
