This female wasp spider is in exactly the same place I snapped one 5 days ago, so I assume it's the same one, but this time she is showing off her web-spinning signature. Wikipedia: "The prominent zigzag shape called the stabilimentum, or web decoration, featured at the centre of the orb is of uncertain function, though it may be to attract insects."

I went to check up on my local wasp spider yesterday. She was still there, but also hanging about was a much smaller spider which, it turns out, is the male of the species, soon to be a post-coital snack. Possibly.

The day before yesterday 'my' wasp spider was gone, but the male was still there, looking intact.

This morning - nothing. No female, no male, no web

So I headed for the meadow abounding with grasshoppers. They were happy to pose
