Rack on fixed
« on: 04 March, 2010, 05:02:12 pm »
Hi all,
I want to put a rack on the back of my fixed(got 120mm spacing)
Can i just go for any rack and use spacers(would have to be long though?) or are there only certain ones that i can use.
Im looking at these 2 here:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/tortec/tour-ultralite-rear-rack-ec006627
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/tortec/tour-rack-ec005641
Or even this one:
http://www.evanscycles.com/products/blackburn/ex1-expedition-rack-ec005638

Never bought a rack before so could do with some advice.
Cheers

It's never even occurred to me to consider OLN in choice of rack.

I guess that the legs flex enough to accommodate any reasonable frame width.

I have the Tortec Ultralight, BTW, and it's very good.

I did think that, but if a rack is meant for 130mm and i put it on a bike with 120mm spacing then the difference is 10mm which is going to flex it abit.
I do like the look of the Ultralight.

5 mm each side.  It'll be fine.

anyway, since AFAIK racks (apart from for tandems) are not sold specifically for frame widths it'll have to be :)

How do you know it won't fit 120 perfectly ?

Rack eyes?

Before you rush out and buy one think of how it will mount.

Rack eyes?
You mean, using the other set of mounts on the rear drop outs(using one set for mudguards) and then i have a set of eyes on either side at the top(which i already have a nice shiny bolt in instead of a blank hole)
That about right?
My frame is basicly a Pearson Touche frame with Langdale(local shop to me wrote on it) wrote on it.

You're way too young for a rack. Give it at least another 25yrs.   ;)

Ive already got full mudguards, it cant get much worse.

Quite right, it will only be 5mm either side.
I shall blame it on lack of sleep and a day that is long
(why does it feel like a long day, but then there never seems to be enough hours in some days? ???)

If you don't want to bend it you can always use longer bolts and a spacer (some washers or a nut).
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

My rack (Tortec Ultralite) has been swapped between MTB, geared Audax bike and fixed Audax bike (120 OLN fixed specific frame), several times back and forth.

No problems, no spacers.

Hell, we've got a standard Tubus onna 160mm OLN tandem.

Just bend it  :)

The Tortec tour rack from Evans looks very similar to the rack on my Pearson, brought at the same time as the bike and fitted by Pearson.

Don't use spacers, the bolt will flex up and down. It's not good for the screw threads and your screw could loosen and drop out.

I've just put a Tortec Ultralight on a Pearson Touche frame.  If anything I had to flex it out slightly.

I just got one today and fitted it.
Fitted perfectly. No need to bend it in at all
Im surprised by how light it is aswell. I thought it would be heavier.
Cheers
Now to save up and look around for a pannier/rack/trunk bag that isnt too much.
