Mibbee we should agree a start time for all yACFers - that would make the start more sociable and increase the chances of riding together rather than getting swamped by the Musselburgh RC Chain Gangs.

Whoever gets their emailed choice of times first should post what time they've picked.

Got the routesheet etc. in the post today.  I'm all for a sociable ride - I'll have trouble keeping up with most of you as it is (fat b*****d alert) without starting half an hour after you.

Options are:  7.5 to 8 hours  10:00am
                      7 to 7.5 hours  10:05am
                      6.5 to 7 hours  10:10am
                      6 to 6.5 hours  10:15am
                      5.5 to 6 hours  10:20am
                      5 to 5.5 hours  10:25am
                      etc. 'til 10:40am

what'd you think?

That's a bonkers way of starting people off, is that how they're commonly done? The slower lot will have 8 groups of riders passing them, all for the sake of delaying the finish of the fast people by 40 minutes.

As a slow rider I actually liked the way it started - you can view it as demoralising having all these groups pass you - or look on the bright side - it gives you groups to follow, and saves you being on your lonesome from mile two ::-)
There was still only one person left in the hall when we got back :-[

I'll go for the 10am start, but I'm not promising a 4hr ride. I'll be happy if I can get round without needing hospital treatment. ::-)

10am it is then.  I've emailed the organiser with my preference.

I might have done it if I was fitter, but I lost so much fitness being off the bike for a month when I was ill. I've only made it home from work without having to walk part way three times this year!

Kirst, don't you worry about not feeling up to joining those nutters on the Hell of East Lothian. Blizzards, Gales, Punctures, Crashes, Fights, Tears Before Bedtime.  Is that what you want? Cos that's what you get on that ride. (IME  ;))

Come to sunny Forfar instead.  8)
Our wee club is putting on about a dozen rides this year, the first likely ones being a weekend in late April, with a 100k on Saturday (with the word "flat" in the title), and a doddle of a 50k on Sunday. Much more sensible.
It's a bit weird, but actually quite wonderful.

Hey Kirst, you could always take the Eck approach to this particular ride. Start with everyone else at 10am, ride to Gifford, have a long and leisurely lunch in the Goblin Hall, ride back to the start. With a bit of thought you'll be arriving back at the same time as everyone else. You'll be looking fresher than most and will be able to say with hand on heart that you didn't walk up the Rigg!

Ooh, the Goblin Ha sounds like a much more sensible idea, it's got ale. :P

Hmm, just for the record, Kirst, the plan was not solely of my making. The EH12 Easter Arrow Team of Y Lee G, Ernst, and Hiberniam Exile was "in training" on last year's informal ToEL, and invited me to partake of lunch with them, not in the Goblin
Ha' as alleged, but in a knit-your-own-soup kinda cafe whose name I forget.

But, as you say, Kirst, as plans go, it wasn't a bad one.  ;)

I've entered this event (my 2nd ever audax) and will hopefully be starting with Valkyrie and Dave. Is it wrong that I'm looking forward to this or am I just being too naive?
Weather forecast for the weekend?
It's character building verging on epic.

I don't think that it's wrong - it's a nice route.  How enjoyable it is, however, will depend on the weather on the day.

Long-range weather forcast at the moment is very cold with snow after dark  ;D

Ok, seriously, what time are people starting? I'm inclined to put 10am and just get going - I'm not going to be fast. Anyone else? I'm sure you can catch up with me even if I have to start alone....  :)

I put 10:00am on my e-mail earlier in the week and asked to start with Mr. MercuryKev of this parish.  I've not asked Kev's permission, but he's not used to cycling without me sucking his wheel, so I'm sure he'll be fine with it.  ;)  Seriously, if you want a good laugh, ride an audax with Kev.  ;D  I've not had confirmation or otherwise from the organiser yet.

I've put a 10am start and everyone is welcome to suck my wheel (that doesn't quite sound right).  Be warned that I've been training so I'm going for a ToEL PB :-)

No shoes - I'm drilling holes in my feet and attaching cleats!  It's the next stage of audax hardness after sandals.
