I find it easier to record the whole ride in one go, then upload it to strava directly when I get to a computer. If the ride is likely to be beyond the battery life of my Garmin 200, I just run it from a power bank taped to my stem from the start, or use the USB port of my Luxos U, depending which bike I'm on. It saves faffing about at controls and after the ride. Also, when using external power the backlight is automatically on, which is handy at night.
When I make a track to follow, I upload the gpx track for the whole ride to bikehike, then add control locations as course points, not using the generic option. I give the track a suitable name, adjust the speed, save it as a tcx file and copy this to New Files on the Garmin. This means that I get a single track with countdown of distance and time to the next control. When approaching the penultimate control, it tells me the distance to that control and the estimated time to the end of the ride, based on the average speed that I put in to bikehike.
