Dining in Oxford
« on: 20 May, 2016, 12:58:29 pm »
Nah, nothing fancy - just looking for good pub grub.

I'm in Oxford tomorrow and will have some time to kill and an appetite to sate before attending a gig in the evening.  The venue is between Oxford University Press and Castle Mill Stream, and I'll have around three hours spare before the gig.  Taking that into account, where should I go (and/or avoid)?

TIA

Pinch of salt required here as it's about 20 odd years since I lived there but the Turf Tavern is a nice touristy venue and a very cool pub with good beer in my day, but closer to you I'd try either the Eagle and Child or Lamb and Flag pubs - these have a bit Tolkein-CS Lewis history about them.

I just checked some latest reviews for them and the Lamb and Flag seems to get the best thumbs up for those last two.

Given the sme caveat as Caeru, it's 20-odd years since i lived there, I'd just follow my nose, same as I do whenever I'm in a new location.

Magdelen Arms on Iffley Road is on my must visit list but that's probably the wrong side of town for you.

Rose and Crown on South Parade is a great pub. A little shabby but good food and well kept beer.

[off topic] I had my last underage drink in the Lamb and Flag

Assume it's Megadeath that you're off to see? ;D

The Lamb & Flag looks good, may also see what The Jericho is like.

Paul, unfortunately both of yours are a bit too far afield as I'll be sans velo.  If the forecast was better I'd be on the road by now to play tourist a bit and could have used one of those for lunch, but it's just too miserable out there today.

Thought that might be the case but may be options for next time?

It' 20 odd years since I lived there but not 20 odd years since I've been there. :-P

Those three pubs are like the moon - always there and dependable ;)

Quick drink in The Old Bookbinders, may return for food.

EDIT:  Went back for food, and quite glad I did.  I really like the place.  Not sure what it's like in the afternoon, but if you want to eat there on a Friday or Saturday evening you either take your chance in the bar or book a table a week in advance (from overheard conversation).   During my post-dinner stroll I noticed there were a surprising number of pubs in the area, but wasn't able to check them all out.
