Public to have no say in Eurovision Song Contest
« on: 30 January, 2011, 06:16:57 pm »
I've just heard that the BBC is to allow the viewing public no say whatever in the choice of the UK's entry to the Eurovision Song Contest.

I'm appalled.

I'm even more appalled they've picked Blue.

That's merely a reflection of their political bias.

PS I have no idea who Blue is, but you knew that.

Going by the last few years when the entries were decided by the public I have to support this measure wholeheartedly.

It's Eurovision. It's a joke. Who cares?

I only started this thread to demonstrate to the doubters how cool, hip and culturally aware I was. Has it worked?

On recent performance, I don't think it matters whether 'we' pick the artist or not.

People who can sing might be seen as an advantage, but not always...

I love Eurovision.

So do I. It is vitally important to our culture and fosters good connections with our European brothers and sisters.

I just hope that we continue to get nils point :D

I hope the "authorities" pick something with a decent original gimmick.

Fire? Swans? Naked men playing trombones? Full brass band? Boy scout theme?

Come on the UK!!!!

How can anyone not like Eurovision? Especially when it throws up camp genius like http://www.youtube.com/v/P4VcSQE7DXg&rel=1 and http://www.youtube.com/v/T9rJLtz64Hg&rel=1, and has winners like http://www.youtube.com/v/S4nIyRGVnmA&rel=1? We have a Eurovision party every year!

My daughter tells me Ireland is going to have Jedward as their entry.

I think they'll win.

I hope they sing 'My lovely horse'.

I love Eurovision too.

Getting slowly sloshed with Terry Wogan while watching glitter and dance routines. What's not to like?

Wogan no longer commentates on Eurovision, it's Graham Norton now.

I assume this isn't going to result in anything radical like something actually good being entered or anything like that? No? As you were...

I never got into Eurovison, even when all around me were squeeing their bits off about it. I don't even like Terry Wogan. Humbug.

The best Eurovision party I ever attended was the one where I made a thoroughly catastrophic navigational error based on a tree that I failed to recognise because it hadn't had leaves on it last time I saw it, and by the time we eventually arrived at our destination we were sufficiently high on carbon monoxide and petrol fumes from Hannah's beetle that the songs didn't seem that bad after all.

Yeah.

Eurovision would be much more interesting if it was based on the traditional folk music of each country rather than pop. And if Scotland, Wales and N Ireland were allowed their own entries !

Don't worry, it's still GRATE.

I quite often go and watch it on the big screen at the Cameo. It's brilliant fun.

It's extremely funny to watch it conjunction with the Ken Bruce commentary on Radio 2, but problematic, as the digital delay puts it out of synch. I shall start a campaign to have a red button option for that.
Graham Norton is too camp to commentate on something so camp. Bruce actually analyses the musical content, while keeping an eye on the absurdity of it. It usually clashes with a 400km PBP qualifier, I may have to take a radio.
