Female football referees
« on: 08 March, 2015, 04:52:05 pm »
Whilst taking the dog to the park this morning, a game of football was under way. Nothing unusual about that: on a Sunday morning we often spend a few minutes watching the football.

However, this was different: after one blast on the whistle, I heard a distinctly female voice giving instructions and, indeed, this seemed to be an adult men's game being refereed by a woman who I would say was probably in her mid-20s.

I thought this was a really refreshing change. Many hundreds of times have I watched, albeit briefly, a bit of park football, and this was the first occasion that a woman has been in charge of the game.

Has anyone else seen this? What percentage of qualified referees are female?

There's at least one assistant in the Premiership. Presumably she'll graduate to taking charge in due course?

I've been to at least one Conference match refereed by Amy Frean.

It's topical news at the moment, with all the sexist chanting at big clubs.
It is simpler than it looks.

And, allegedly, with British squaddies shouting sexist abuse at the Australian women's team during an international in Cyprus.

Looking at this site, I would guess it was Claire Stott.
