The plane I was in the morning was hit by lightning, which made my sphincters twitch a bit.
Fortunately nothing vital appeared to fall off and we made it to the destination ok, if a bit bumpily

A couple of points have occurred to me.

My parents had 6 children, who in their turn had 11.

Those 11 have now produced 10 of my grandchildren's generation. I feel very confident that my children won't produce any more grandchildren (we have 2). All bar 1 of my children's generation are now over 30, and three of them are over 40.

That represents a small decline in the population.

My father was an only son, but had 4 sisters. The Walker surname is well-represented in my generation and there are 6 males in the next whose surname is Walker, but our grandchildren's generation have no boys with the surname Walker. I think we are an endangered species - our bit of it, anyway.

Whereas my branch seems to be expanding exponentially.
Dad is one of four but only one sister had any issue and he is a 55 year old bachelor.
Mum is one of 5, all of whom have reproduced.

My parents have 6 kids, five of whom have produced 23 grandchildren,  (including five male Vechts) with another Vecht on the way.
One sister of mine has two grandchildren, my brother's son now has a male child, continuing the name. My other sister will hopefully become a grandmother in the summer...

I'm the only child and got four siblings. One of them got five kids and one got a grand child that is older than his second child. I used to go a see the family and we could count the gang on two hands, now I need seven of them. And that is only on my mums side of the family.

Both my parents had one sibling.  Neither had children. I have no cousins.
We are a very small family, and that seemed "normal" to me as I grew up.
Imagine the culture shock of becoming part of Mrs. B's family.  She has about 900 cousins.  Some of the seem to be cousin to themselves, or something.

I thought I had a 'normal' number of cousins: one on Dad's side and nine on Mum's (another two, born very late to my youngest bachelor uncle, did not feature before I was nearly 40).
The 'abnormal' feature is my parents' issue!

Lt. Col. Larrington (retd.) is an only child; neither of Mrs Larrington (decd.)'s sisters had any sprogs.  Ergo Dr Larrington and I are free from first cousins though I dare say there are still umpteen cousins n times removed, such as the Queen or Postman Pat, if you look hard enough.

At the last count I had eight first cousins & six step first cousins, all younger. Plus nine surviving (was ten, but one died) half-cousins of one of my parents whose ages neatly straddle mine, being from nine years older to seven years younger than me, & so have always been more like first cousins. And then there are the Danish non-relatives-except-for-wartime-fake-Danish-documents*-showing-one-to-be-a-child-of-one-of-my-Danish-relatives-not-a-German-citizen-from-Flensburg, of who three are sort of semi-cousins.

Some people find my family complicated. I don't understand that. It all seems straightforward to me.

Outdoor twirly chairs. Like office chairs but made of wood and metal and bolted to the ground. We found them today behind the new life sciences building and spent some enjoyable time twirling.

Mr R and I have just booked our holibob....  We're taking my mother to France for a week in July.  Jack will be coming with us - we just need to get a photo for his passport.

We'll be staying in a nice little gite in a village just near Amboise and about 1/2 hours from my uncle's place.

Excellent, hope she's recovering well.

She is thank you. More good news. The numbness from the nerve block is wearing off, and today, 10 days since the op and a week after she came home, she felt confident enough to come down our (very steep, narrow) stairs on her own. Indeed, whilst I was still at work. That really lifted her spirits  :D
