What made these holes?

Noticed these holes in a log in the woodpile yesterday. I don't go there much this time of year but they look fairly fresh. Holes are about 1cm across.

My guess would be the large Poplar beetle larva. I've come across them in Willow logs - they're huge.  :o

Doesn't the pile of wood shavings suggest something trying to get in, rather than something trying to get out?

Do you know what sort of tree that log came from?

I admit severe ignorance of the sorts of creepy-crawlies that could have enjoyed feasting on your log. Nevertheless many of them are specialists & species of tree may be helpful for internet searching.

No, it's from the last of the wood the previous owner left us so that makes it at least 2 years old
