What on earth were you doing in New Malden ?

Visiting an acquaintance.  FTR, I can recommend Sorabol, on the High Street, for lunch.

I should probably post about my, um, adventure, on the ride out there, riding through Wimbledon Common for the first time.  In short: COR + cyclocross.
;D  Andrij.  I pronounce you Complete and Utter GIT

:-)  The Commons Rangers seem to do as much as they can to discourage overuse of the Common by cyclists.

I cycled it east from NM, and found it good.  Not yet had a chance to cycle west.

LittleWheelsandBig, trackside at Hillingdon while I was coming round the corner with a heart-rate in excess of R17, but had disappeared by the end of the race.

Also HK and Mr Larrington, who I actually got a chance to speak to.

Spotted a CrinklyLion on Cemetery Road in York a few days, cycling past on a very cool looking tandem. I was in the car sat in traffic going the other way, so I decided not to bellow incoherent noises out of the window at her.

... a BricktionaryTM.

Wassat? A dictionary as used by Fred and Wilma Flinstone?
It's a BSL to English dictionary, with words arranged alphabetically by initial hand position of BSL. Three dimensional hand positions and gestures are "written" using two-dimensional annotation which looks like Klingon, say. I likened it in concept to the annotation used for choreography but whereas I know virtually nothing about BSL, I know absolutely nothing of choreography, so take that with a dose of salt. Fortunately there are also photographs showing the word being signed. But totally useless, as far as I can make out, for looking up how to sign an English word in BSL.

More to the point, in a contest between it and the Maglite, I reckon it's evens.

The first attempt at creating a dictionary of BSL, from the days when you'd have needed a Laserdisc player and a Video Toaster to do it properly.  Every student buys a copy, struggles to decode the notation, becomes frustrated at the limited vocabulary and ends up using it as an improvised chair leg / monitor stand / paper-flattening weight.  It was a groundbreaking project at the time, but these days we have web-based video for cataloguing signs in a more natural and easy to access format, so it mostly serves as an in-joke.

But totally useless, as far as I can make out, for looking up how to sign an English word in BSL.

Like any other bilingual dictionary, it goes both ways.  The English->BSL section is a lot thinner, as it doesn't contain photographs and description of the signs (just references to the relevant entry).

Turning a static photo and a description of movement into a sign is always a bit hit and miss, though, even when you have a framework for describing things like handshapes.  The much more accessible Cath Smith books (which are aimed at language learners, rather than a piece of academic research) have the same problem, and are best used to jog your memory rather than expanding your vocabulary.

Sunday lunchtime. A small flock of ordinaries going up The Mall in that London, doing their best to not run over any C17 soldiery who seemed to be everywhere.
Any of you lot?

There's a regular(ish) flock of them. It's a hire and tuition kind of a thing I think.

Me, totally randomly.

This morning I was on my way to meet a pal for her first ever tandem ride. Someone did a drive-by shooting of me and placed the video on an FB group "Vintage Cycles UK" and labelled it "How sad to see a friendless tandem". Wobbly John of this parish is a member of the same group and spotted me!

Does this make me the first YACFer to spot myself out for a ride?  ;D

I've often wondered where all those drive-by videos of me end up.  I've yet to track one down on the interweb.
