Title: Ergo Finger?
Post by: eckagain on 27 March, 2020, 08:49:44 am
I did my last two days officially permitted ride on a bike I've not used for a while. I noticed that the right hand Campag ergo lever was  quite stiff pushing the chain up to a bigger sprocket. I use the middle finger on my right hand to actuate the lever.

It is now really sore if I try to bend it, with pain also up my wrist. I'm guessing it's tendon-related? It's been bloody sore all night, and really hurts if I try to hold or grip anything. Ibuprofen maybe masks it a bit.

Should I get the frozen peas on it? And am I better to try to keep it moving by bending it. or just keep it still? Poor me.  :'(

I could never have used a single finger to operate the main ergo lever! No wonder it's sore. I would have used at least fingers 1 & 2 from memory.

Update: turns out this was a prelude to a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, which affected both hands, my right shoulder and neck, and exacerbated a knee problem.
Thankfully, the doc reckons it has been caught early enough to be contained.  I've been prescribed long term meds, and had an injection of "something" yesterday that has had dramatic results.
I've been getting physio for the knee and, after about 6 weeks off the bike (just a coincidence of timing with lockdown), I've managed two epic rides of 11km over the past couple of days with no adverse effects. It felt great to be out again.
I see there are a couple of threads here about arthritis, so I might just join in there.

I think I suffer from the shimano equivalent.   If temps are low, my left hand cannot shift back on to the big ring: I have to stop and do it with my other hand.  This only happens when my hands get cold.

Please can I ask everyone to NAME rather than number fingers?

Thumb
Index
Middle or long
Ring
Little

Numbering fingers can be ambiguous, as, for example, some refer to the ring finger as the third finger and some think of it as the fourth..

The problem is that you have five digits but only four fingers!

Indeed. Given that there's a nursery rhyme/song about the names of the digits, it should not be beyond our members to use them.
