Wore 3/4s yesterday. Perfectly comfortable until dashing for home just before dark, after an hour in the pub during which the temperature outside had dropped sharply, when my calves got a bit chilly.

A setback.

It was light when I woke up (yay!) so I left early and did the long commute. Ice on the lanes, not enough to be a problem but not spring-like either.

Daffodils in the park about 2 inches high, usually grown and open by March 1st.

Underneath our bird feeder spilled seed is starting to sprout.

So which vistor to the garden has been dubbed Onan, then?  ;D

More than a dozen moorhens were cavorting about on the lake today, indulging in a little displaying and some fisticuffs.

First dandelions of the year in flower today. Also a couple of daisies that were nearly open in a brief spell of sun.

First daffodils in bloom today.

I saw some too, in Ewhurst, Surrey. Nothing yet in Southend though.

I had hoped to have heard a chiff-chaff today, but I didn't. I think the summer visitors tend to wait for a decent southerly wind to spring up to help them on their way, and we just haven't had one. I think it was mostly south-easterly today but still bitterly cold.

Heard my first yellowhammer of the year today, by Clifton Campville. Also noticed the Alder catkins in a sheltered spot by Swadlincote were just starting to dangle and, presumably, start pollinating.

First daffodils in bloom today.

Really?!  I was quite pleased to see my first daffodil shoots yesterday, fighting for space amongst the yellow crocuses on the front at Middleton One Row.

I also saw my first spring lambs today, but most of all I was quite pleased today to be able to smell the sap rising, and the musty scent of the rotting leaves in Seven Woods.  With the sunshine and the relative warmth, it's starting to feel like spring.

Still bloody cold here. I doubt that the shade temperature has exceeded 5°C so far this month. Isn't that below the temperature at which plants grow? O level biology was a long time ago but 42°F is a figure which sticks in my mind for some reason.

During a meeting, something dropped from one of the beams.  It was a very sleepy wasp.  It's now a dead one.

Mrs P found a dead wasp in our garden the other day. Dunno how long it had been there though. It could've been the Ötzi of wasps.

That hardly counts! It was almost 200 miles off the coast! ;D

I'd be most surprised if any forummer sees a swallow in the UK before April.

I looked at daffodils today and I reckon it will be another week before they are in flower.

YES! SIGNS OF SPRING

It didn't snow today. There wasn't a frost. There isn't any ice on the pond. There wasn't a wind off the North Sea.

Break out the shorts and the Bar-B!

There was an Essex daffodil yesterday. Just the one in 75 miles of riding.
