Narrow semi slicks in 26"?
« on: 19 June, 2017, 02:52:30 pm »
My youngest daughter wants to put something faster on her Formeula 26" Cyclocross bike for the summer - right now it has Schwalbe 26 x 1.35" CX Pro and we are looking at things like Schwalbe Hurricane and various semislicks

Just wondered what folks have got to work well with this bike?

To update have tried some Kenda Kross which I managed to track down in 26 x 1.75 (as opposed to the much more common 1.95") - which puts them at about 45mm. They are too wide at the bottom bracket of the frame

Still searching for a 26" semi slick tyre, ideally in the 35 to 40mm width - is there such a thing?

I've had 26" x 28 (IIRC) Gatorskins in the past - may have been 25 or 30, but they should be around.

Schwalbe Kojaks in 1.35. Fast as you like compared to anything with a tread . . .
VELOMANCER

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

40x559 rubino pro is a pretty fast tyre and is cheap at CRC right now.

FWIW I find that 'normal rules for tyre widths' don't apply to frames with 559 wheels, because they are almost invariably about twice as stiff as frames/forks made for larger wheels.

For example, a 32mm tyre width that might be just fine in a 700C frameset can be bone-jarring in a 559 frameset, so a good rule of thumb is to  think of a tyre width that would be OK in 700C, then add ~10mm, and that'll be just right in 559.

cheers

I'm assuming this is for CX type riding and something like Kenda Kwest or Maxxis Gypsy, both available in 1.5 inch are too slick.

Are these worth considering https://www.athleteshop.co.uk/continental-ride-tour-tyre-26x1-5-black?as=athlete&kwd_id=20051-AGI-28160327349-ASI-174489464469-ASCN9PWGB8&gclid=CjwKEAjwvr3KBRD_i_Lz6cihrDASJADUkGCaPfnHRwOzmDw63mEN-GujChU5x2r3pA714eBO8I-QQhoCrd7w_wcB

note, no experience of the seller also on evil bay.

I think you are going to struggle. I have a set of Conti Goliaths,  which would probably be perfect, but they are like hens teeth now. Mine are older than your daughter and I wouldn't be comfortable selling them due to the risk of them failing.

thanks folks, some good ideas here

been hoping to find skinny semi-slicks in 26" for summer off road / gravel / mixed use, and suspect such a thing doesnt exist - some interesting road oriented tyre options that could work though. Guess the blocky tread touring tyres is a good direction to look and one I have ignored so far

I like the Geax Mezcal 2.1 on my single speed MTB in the summer but these are way too wide for a CX frame. Semi slicks like these seem to be out of favour - or is it me being out of date and no one does fast, dry summer off road riding with things like these these days?

PS looked at the Athleteshop tyres, they look good BUT they are not ETRTO 559 26" tyres and would not fit a standard modern 26" rim - in case anyone looks to buy them at the excellent price these would only fit old (French?) ETRTO 584 rims

It's more that 26 inch wheels are out of favour, give the industry 10 years or so and they'll re-invent them. Cynical? Moi?

panaracer Paselas?  I've got some very lightly used 26 x 1.25's you can have for nowt... I upsized to 2.25's - much more comfy :)

They're tan sidewalls so not sure how popular that'd be with a junior.

Thanks Mike, would be interested

unfortunately my kids have been infected with my love of less mainstream aspects of cycling - fast, skinny tan wall tyres on a mini CX - what's not to like!
