Finely poised. 4 fairly quick wickets before lunch followed by a run chase. Good.
Long drawn out tail leaving an improbable run target. Bad.

Rain. Meh.

But, this is proper sport. Needs brains. Stamina. Skill.

cf Pootball. Mercan Foofball. Rugby. Bafeball. All-thetics. Motor Pacing. Fugby League.

None of them can take 5 days. None of them involve the duelling, the tactics, the grit that 5 day cricket has.

England need over 200 to win in the last innings with only 2 sessions to get them. That's a tall order. I'd say that India are more likely to win than England, but the draw should be the favourite...

They need to get India out first.

Of course - and now they'll need at least 260. That's beyond them, I'm afraid.

Joe Root is a fine batsman - but I can't recall a worse captain, except for Ian Botham.

Oh dear, Thank goodness we have an opener at 3. Batsmen 1 & 2 both gone for 0 (first time in a home test) and England 1-2 with the one being an extra.

That'll be the opener who was out first ball in the first innings?  He's a Bolton boy, so I really want him to do well.

The openers score so slowly, getting them out quickly was clearly always part of England's plan! :)

Not been paying attention toThe Hundred as its just not cricket.

However i am listening to the Women’s final on a long journey. The second battery team is currently 14 runs for 6 wickets.

Get home safely, J.  Cricket score at Forest Green, too - in your favour!  Rochdale bounced back,  I see.

I can't help but think that The Hundred is cannibalising T20. Loads of people who have anything to do with it seem more than keen to proclaim how brilliant it is and it's introducing a 'whole new audience', but isn't that more a comment on T20's marketeers being unable to do their job properly ?

And in true BOF stylee I don't have any time for either. Test cricket is where it's at maaaaan.

I think the idea is that in the Hundred, when a match is over there's another one along in a few minutes but when England lose a Test match, you have to wait days before you can watch them lose the next one.  I think this may be a big factor in the recent concern over sport and mental health problems; the size of the problem is hugely underestimated because they are not considering the effect on the spectators, who are not even getting paid.

Take a look at the delivery that Anderson sent own for his second wicket. That's some devilish backspin on that ball, and the seam is perfectly vertical throughout the ball's flight. Wonderful delivery.

Only the third time ever in Test match history that a team has bowled out the opposition and ended day one in the lead and with both their openers still out there.

And we've won by 10 wickets! Hurrah!

So, all level in the series, great turnaround by Root's mob.
