I came across some photos the other day of PBP 1991 and 1995. Here are Bill Best and Bob Maitland before PBP 1995. I think they must have ridden against each other in the mid 1950s. Both still at their racing weight.

As Timm drove around the course keeping tabs on us, the stink of burning oil from his Alfa Romeo still lingers in my throat, as does his infective deep laugh (although not down my throat, obviously).

John Walker, Dave Lewis, Timm and me hiding his Alfa Romeo at Brest in 1991. After 600km of tailwind we now faced 600km of stiff headwind

Timm had made a collapsible flagpole with lengths of metal tubing and at controls clamped it to his roof rack with a big Welsh flag at the top, so we could always find him and his car at controls. He also had his bike on his roof rack because (a) he didn't want to leave it unattended on the campsite in SQY, and (b) it could be raided for spares if necessary.

Me finishing PBP in 1991 (top) and 1995 (bottom). Note in the top picture the wind blowing flags on the flagpoles Brestward.

It must be 1991 because they rode the recumbent "le grand lit" in 1995, I rode with the group, organised by Noel I think, from the ferry to Paris.    How are they now?

Not sure about Noel but I think IanH is in touch with him.  Pete now lives on a farm just on the edge of Lincoln, not sure if he still rides though.

The last I heard about Noel was that he'd moved to France, but that was years ago. I'm sure there are people with more up-to-date news of him.

The Grand Lit was 1999.  I rode with them from the ferry to Paris, and lent Noel my spare (!) SPD shoes for PBP.

Noel is now living in southwest France, I think.

Noel does live in France, I had a brief chat with him at the velodrome at the start of PBP 2015, he was helping out there.

My account of PBP 1999, featuring Noel Simpson, Ian H, and quite a few others:

"and I told him about the electric eels and UFOs he could expect to see on Edinburgh-London, if my experience was anything to go by…"

That and the petrol station one had me in stitches Peter

He is now back in the UK.

Not only 1999 - I remember it and I didn't ride in 1999.

Good grief! You mean they did PBP on that contraption more than once?
