I reckon BB7s are fine, FWIW. Especially at that price! I bought mine on ebay too - they even came in an Avid box.

The ICE trike carrying 55kg of cargo which made it to the pole last year, including crossing a mountain range, was fitted with BB7s. Good enough? (just read the CTC mag article).

My only issue with BB7s is that they need an annual strip-down and greasing, lest the stationary adjuster rust solid.  They've otherwise been problem-free and easy to adjust, though I accept hydraulics are in their own league.

SOP in extremely cold climates; at those sort of temperatures hydraulic brakes are about as useful as a glass hammer - ask anyone who's done, say, the Iditarod Invitational or the Arrowhead 135.

Still won't alter my opinion that BB7s are over-rated, though. YOPMWV.

a set of tacx antares rollers, to eliminate excuses when it's cold and miserable outside. blimey, they are loud - like a washing machine on a fast spin cycle..
also - a stages power meter, but still need to go to evans to collect it tomorrow.

What do they do for cars and motorbikes then?

On the cable/hydro in extreme temps question, it's a different kettle of fish (higher temps produced in cars/truck etc).

Anyway, today I have ordered the next round of YACF bottles.  ETA to follow.

Ask someone who drives in such conditions. I have no idea.

ETA: According to the Great Satan of Mountain View, mineral oil typically freezes at around -30C whereas you need to be somewhere south of -40 before DOT fluid starts to get excessively viscous. Determining the effect on braking is left as an exercise for the reader.

A little FWSEing has unearthed silicone brake fluids which are siad to jbex down to -60C, though as such things are hygroscopic you'd want to make very certain that it was fresh and uncontaminated.  Much colder than that and wouldn't you rather be at home in bed?

A mini-ish Kryptonite lock for FrankenErn the commuting bike. the LBS local to work - Fitzrovia Bicycles threw in some mudguard stay end caps which was a nice gesture...

they passed the 'proper bike shop' test - walk in with a quirky bike, if a) they welcome you in and b) if they look at it before they ask what they can sell you - that's a pass   ;D

for the orange Surly, just to add a wee touch of class.

A couple of inner tubes for the tourer, and some tyre levers.
Milk please, no sugar.

They're very pretty. Worth the extra? And is there a UK seller?

Dunno - haven't got them yet. Hopefully Monday.
I've not seen any bad reviews of them - they're not massively heavy and seem to grip bottles very well whilst still allowing them to be removed easily. And, as you say, they're very pretty.

Several.
Westbrooks in Stokesley stock PDW stuff, as does Charlie the Bikemonger (£11.99 per each from him)

A pair of these:- http://www.trpbrakes.com/category.php?productid=1207&catid=206&subcat=0  for the Rohloff bike.
I'm using that bike for commuting now and there's a lot of stop start 'cos of the traffic lights so the trusty BB7s were needing quite regular tweaking (plus the rear braking had always been poor because of the awful cable run).
Initial impressions (riding 1 mile back from the LBS) suggests that braking is light and controllable.
I'll report back when I've got more miles on them.

I'll also report when I get hydraulics fitted to the Disco  ::-)

Some new full-finger gloves from Go Outdoors, as it's definitely too cold for mitts and my old ones have a hole in the finger. I'm not sure what annoyed me more - that the identical but women's equivalent model was half the price of the men's one, or that it didn't fit me well enough for me to save myself a tenner...

finally, fiiiinally they had specialized shoe heel lugs back in stock (they were unobtainable anywhere - was almost tempted to make them from sugru). mine fell apart in february and i've been sliding about on bare carbon heels since, but now the shoes are fettled back into shape.

New valve caps for the Genesis. I'm not normally a valve cap person, but green anodised ones match the decals nicely so I had to. :D

Token Cro-mo freewheel to replace the Dict that sounds like it's about to fall apart at any point. It takes a different tool to the dicta, but the tool comes with the freewheel :)

New freewheel seems smoother, and the bike is now nearly silent
