Yes, it's been ages - as is obvious from the way some of the kids have grown up since the first series.

I need to watch the first series again to remind myself what happened. Obviously I can remember the broad outline but I bet there's lots of detail I've forgotten.

Is this based on the book by Jason Mott?

No, it's a French TV series that is entirely unrelated to Jason Mott's book. Except in the small detail that it has almost exactly the same premise.

There's also a US TV remake of the French TV series.

There's also a US TV adaptation of Jason Mott's book.

All of which are very different. Obviously.

The French series also has the added bonus of having a soundtrack by the best band in the world; the mighty Mogwai.

Watched the first ep on Friday and found it very confusing cos we'd forgotten how the first series ended. So we're watching the first series again on Netflix. Forgot just how damn creepy it was - the Mogwai music definitely adds to that, especially Victor's theme.

I thought it was me. I felt as though I'd missed an episode, or two.

I think they should have played the end of the last series before, just to give us a chance of remembering how it played out.

We've now rewatched the whole of the first series. There's soooo much stuff I'd forgotten. The second series is making more sense now though.

Watched the first series when it came out and found it so bloody dismal* we never watched it again.

I'm part way through the first season.

My theory is that they are all dead, the entire town. Drowned when the dam bursts. The water leaking from the dam and coming up in places is just an echo of what killed them.

I'm confused (but I'm never very good with convoluted plot lines).

"Finding Nemo" is about as complex as I can grasp (it's about Fish trying to locate the actor who plays Spock I think).

The Returned is shot almost entirely in a blue tint and has slow piano music...therefore it must be creepy and involve dead folk.

The eerie lighting is achieved by only shooting at certain times of day, which is also why it took them so long to make the second series. And a lot of the visual styling is inspired by the American artist Gregory Crewdson, which becomes obvious when you look at some his work:

The music is fantastic. Getting Mogwai involved was an inspired move.

I'm still very much enjoying the second series.

Yes, but it's also graded that way (blue/cold) in post-prod. It's a simple way to make your home-videos look "filmic", desaturate the colours/contrast and crank up the blue.
Now everyone looks like a potential Vampyre.

It's used in The Returned a lot, between "warm" grading in a sort of subtle Nice-Place/Bad-Place way.
I have to stop over-analysing films for their use of colour grading and audio "Leitmotifs".

I still think that I'm watching series 3 and missed series 2 completely.

I thought the last episode was getting a bit clearer. Creepy boy child at least.
I must admit to laughing a little bit when I saw what happened to Mrs Costa.

Well, I'm not sure if that's all the questions answered, but a fairly satisfying ending none the less. I've really enjoyed the second series, but I hope they aren't tempted to bring it back for a third.

I pretty much spent 8 episodes saying "Who?", "What?", "Why?, "When?" & "How?" on constant loop.

I need an instruction book, a book of Dead/Alive/Part-dead rules.

My wife is sick of my questions:

"So he was dead but they drowned him... and he came back to life again...but she was dead, and she got shot.....and everyone was upset, because she was dead again, twice dead, even though they didn't like her when she came back the first time...and the dead boy brought her back to life (or rather dead once-ness)..and...and ..but...but"

WTF? What are the rules?

I didn't actually understand what the problem was with the returned dead people.. well, not until the girl started eating her mum.  That struck me as an issue.

Thankyou Lee. I am pretty sure that's the same experience we would have (including the fed-up wife!).

You've saved me wasting a lot of time watching S2.

I also did who?what?why? a lot but they wrapped up quite a lot in the last episode, thankfully.
