Watch the skies!!

As part of the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, 2 Spitfires and 2 Hurricanes are doing several different sorties this Friday to (between them) overfly 38 of the key airfields and sites involved in the conflict.

Full details are shown here, with a map and estimated timings shown here.  They'll be overhead central London at 16.00.

Bah.  Nowhere near Derby, the spiritual home of the Merlin.
Anyway, don't let that spoil your enjoyment of the spectacle.

Doesn't include the home of the Spitfire, either...  but they did fly over Southampton a week or two ago, so mustn't grumble.  Still they are near enough to home to make a little visit and watch.

Hundreds were built in Castle Bromwich near Brum, but nothing. BSA in Small Heath also provided the Browning machine guns. Obviously an insignificant contribution.

Those factories attracted a lot of Luftwaffe attention as well, so the whole area suffered.

Note to self: head for the roof between midday and ten past when they're between Duxford & North Weald.  Though I suspect they'll be a bit too far east.

Is The Oval close enough to the flightpath?

I heard them at 15:58.  Had I been five minutes earlier I could have seen them.

Hey, I work where I work.  I see them at least once a year anyway (generally just randomly).

I somehow dozed at my desk at the relevant time and David says he heard nothing. It was overcast. We are between RAF Hendon as was and Bentley Priory.

On Friday, had a splendid day out at RAF Hendon with my son (cycled to and from the station as well).  Quite a few new things in the last 5 years since we've been there.

Just realised Battle of Britain film now showing on C4, so off to watch that.

On an almost related note saw a Eurofighter take off from hurn this week while i was in the circuit.  I'd just turned crosswind after chugging up to 700 feet, saw it going verticle straight after take off and dissapearing through cloud base.  Incredible to watch

Yesterday.

Marvellous. Wonderful noise, majestic manoeuvres.

Poignant. Explaining to my daughter and niece that their great uncle flew a Lancaster. Initially he was too young to fly in combat so he trained other pilots. Then posted to the Far East and shot down on his first combat mission. 3 years in a Japanese POW camp.

It is simpler than it looks.

Many, many years ago I had the pleasure of watching Concorde and the Lancaster doing repeated circuitsover my old University (Royal Holloway). The Lancaster had to do about four circuits to every one of Concorde's. They were presumably trying to line up a shot with both aircraft flying side by side and I assume they wanted something picturesque in the background.

I was at Duxford on Saturday, and there was a fly past by a Lancaster, Spitfire and Hawker Hurricane.

At the end of the show there were 16 Spitfires in the air. Fantastic sight, and the noise was amazing.
