Adjustable stem query
« on: 27 July, 2008, 12:31:56 pm »
Son is trying to raise his adjustable Ahead Stem.  And we're stuck.

The bolt on the right side of the bendy bit undid fairly easily but we can't undo the left side.
Left coke on it all night and this morning I managed to get it to turn about quarter to half a turn with the aid of a gert big extension on the allen key.
But it now seems stuck again.  I'm worried that I may be doing damage by exerting any more force on it.
This might seem a daft question, but there's no reason why the bolt could be L/H thread, is there?
Just relieve me of this nagging doubt please and I'll feel a little happier about applying more extreem force.

Sorry, can't help.  All the web links form google simply say easily adjustable using just one allen key.

I have  different adjustable stem but from memory 1 side is "captive"  it then has another bolt that grips on a serrated portion.

If I was you I would undo the one that is free completely and see if the bolt will slip out.

If its like the Ritchey adjustable stem, then the right hand bolt is the only one that moves, the other side being captive. To adjust you really need to undo the right hand bolt fully, pull the stem away on that side , re position on the splines then bolt it all back together.  Easy enough but a bit of a faff.

He has taken the one side out completely.  It doesn't help.

It's not the one in the picture, by the way.  It's just whatever Dawes put on their Discovery 301.

Yes, knock out the remaining bolt.

If it is like the one I had, two parts of the forward end of the stem come apart to allow adjustment, as it is is held in position by teeth. The whole thing needs to be separated and reassembled to allow a change in position.

Bloody hell!  So there is! Look!  There's a bolt underneath.  Thanks RR.
Only problem is I only noticed it after I whacked the captive bolt out with extreme force.

Oh well.  At least I'll know what I'm doing next time.

Thanks everyone.
