Rider down - any one still in Rambouillet?
« on: 23 August, 2019, 05:59:21 pm »
Trying to help the wife of rider Q120 locate his bike.
Rider crashed and is in hospital at Mayenne, but bike has apparently crossed finish line (according to timing chip)
The bags on the bike contain rider's insurance docs and his car key so need to find it before beginning the process of repatriation.

Anyone still there can help co-ordinate?

Why should anybody steal a watch when they can steal a bicycle?

An update - thanks to Gattopardo's efforts, bike and rider (as well as rider's car!) have now been reunited.

A round of applause for both him and Somnolent all round, I think.

👍 Gattopardo was a big help to me.
Bikes are for riding, not cleaning!

Where was his bike in the end? I was trying to find it in Rambouillet on Friday night to no avail.

The rider in question has given me permission to repost the following from his email:

Quote
As you probably know my Paris Brest Paris audax ride did not go to plan. My first knowledge of this was waking in the hospital in Mayenne, Normandy on Friday 23rd August. Apparently my rear tyre went bang somewhere on the return at about 1005 kms at about 9pm on Wednesday 21st August. According to a witness unfortunately this happened while I was going at 60km per hour on a sweeping right handed descent and I lost control. My gps shows me travelling at 40mph when catastrophe struck. The result was ‘man vs road surface’ (guess which won?). I ended up unconscious at the roadside, with an ambulance trip and 48 hours of medical sedation with checks for bleeding on the brain. Sadly although I carry ‘ICE’ information my emergency admission meant that the hospital misplaced this and my clothes for a few days so my whereabouts were unknown to family or friends.

The results of my fall were 8 days in intensive care because of the head trauma. Fortunately there is only a small skull fracture, a fracture to inner right ear bones, a couple of broken ribs and road rash, coupled with some heavy grade concussion! The first time I have had such a proper scare, and I feel lucky I am still around. At home recuperating now and facing a few more weeks of taking it easy.

I know that my partner was in touch with a number of people, and she spoke with warmth and respect for your efforts in trying to locate me.As a consequence I was found and contacts helped reunite me with my bike, credit cards and passport. I will admit that I been very touched and knowing of people's commitment brought a tear to my eye more than once. Thank you for your support and help, it is much appreciated and helped resolve a really difficult scary situation for my family and me.

He also tells me that they are planning to take Gattopardo and S.O. out for a meal as a thank you once he's allowed out by the neurologist.

As well as, justifiably, praising Gattopardo, let's also acknowledge the part that Somnolent played in bring the rider's problems to our collective attention and helping to facilitate the interventions that took place.

Accident apart, that's a terrific story.  Anyone like to run a country?
