19-20 starters.

I'll start the bidding at 15 finishers. :D

I noticed one setting off on fixed. Looked like about 65" to me.

They should get blown up the pretty tough night section to Hexham. If the wind drops on the way to Penrith it would be very handy. I think that section will be the bit that is talked about if the wind stays up, especially if it rains as well.

I saw two fixed, the guy with the beard and the Brixton hat, and Mike Thompson of the VC167.

I hope they are using SPD or Time ATAC so they can walk a bit easier. ;D

I remember last year thinking that I walked more miles on Pendle than I do when I go for a walk.
Not that I go for a walk very often...

Though I did put my wheel on the wrong way around and was using a bigger gear than I'd planned. Thought it'd be good practise for Crackpot etc.

Oof - steady 15mph southwesterly at RAF Leeming. Returning west is going to be rough methinks!

Latest:

20-riders started this morning. No-one had arrived at Robin Hood's Bay (171km) by 12:40pm.

I'll be catching up with them all later on the way to Langwathby.

It feels a bit stronger than that out there. It'll make Stokesley to Barnie a bit of a slog.

And there are some hefty showers knocking about. Hopefully the riders can dodge 'em!

The wind this side of the pennines is rather unpleasant as well St Bees Head weather station was reading SW 23mph gudsting 32mph. Whatever it was it felt bad on the way home today.

...and that's why I've always used Time ATAC cleats/pedals. :-)

I suspect the Pendle chaps are in for a wild and windy night though. It's been interesting follwing some of them on Twitter - hash tag #pendle600
You're only as successful as your last 1200...

Simon was at Hexham 343k at 11.40pm. Marcus, RegT and Dr Mekon were with him. He said the wind was epic but the rain hadn't really got them yet. Apparently Jonah fell over  :o
Good luck out there all!

Now at 400k sleep stop. Descending Hartside in cloud and driving rain is not recommended. Reg and Dr Mekon here; me and Dr Mekon were 5th and 6th to arrive.

I am the 7th in and I am glad to be here. Bit touch and go descending Hartside. I was so cold and wet, really in a bad way.

Warm and dry now.

Jonah did have a tumble when another of his AC Hackney team mates clipped wheels going up a hill - it was a comedy tumble for sure. More scary sounding was bob bialek having a front tyre blowout going down Rosedale Chimney Bank (the one with sign suggesting (insisting?) that cyclists dismount to go down it.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

An hour of decent kip and I am readying for the off. Look better again now.

8 riders still to come, including all 5 Hackney riders who have hopefully weathered the storms.

Man that was grim.

Sadly, I ran out of time half way round.  Setting off nearly an hour late, due to a sequence of mishaps didn't help, but the main reason was too much work and too little sleep in the run up - just did not have it in me to fight that wind.  Fell asleep on the bike between Barnard C and Hexham, so had a kip in a bus shelter and when I woke up the time was out.  Cycled to Langwathby - heading West to Alston was ridiculously hard.  Caught the train to Helifield and rode down to Pendleton.

Massive well done to all the finishers, for June that was bordering on the silly.  The Easter Arrow was easier.

Kevin - hope you got home OK, and Bob - well done for clawing time back after your enforced stop, hope you finished in time.

Commiserations, Paul.  Starting something like this with insufficient sleep is a real disadvantage.  It must have been pretty tough - and you knew what to expect from last year.  Anyone who finishes this ride (as you did last year) has done something special.  There will be some tales to tell....

Well, damn that was a hard ride!!!
Thought I wasn't going to make my train from Clitheroe today, but with the help of Swiss Hat and Ray, we kept chipping away at the never ending climbs, rain and wind! We got in just after 17:00, leaving me about 10min to spare to make my train... 👍
Knackered now - more later, but surely one of the hardest 600's 😩

Sorry to hear that - must have been a tough overnight section. I knew I was done for when I started losing time on the "easy section" whilst fighting the head wind and thought the tops would be tough. Rode into the westerly this morning to get the car from Pendleton and it must have been even incredibly difficult going over to Seascale. Fair play to Robert - after his blow out on Rosedale Bank he came off on another descent after another front wheel blow out and looked shaken at Robin Hood's Bay. Must have been tough to make back time after that.

DrMekon and I finished about 20 minutes ago. Almost 1000m climbing in the final 50-odd k for extra spice.

Oh, yes and there we were, thinking we were on a 'roll' having felt the faster A-roads to Carnforth went better than thought!
Quite especially cruel on the last 24km (that was above the 600 mark) - always a nice touch! 😱
