Riding home, the rear hub gear of my tandem gave a funny click (crunch) and then would not change gear out of fourth.
The indicator doesn’t seem to be facing the same way as it was and I have no idea how to fix it... any clues? If you live in E17 you could come and look, stroke your chin, tut and drink tea.

Removing the guts from the shell is fairly straightforward and should let you see what has busted. Dismantling beyond that is beyond my experience though.

Is the handlebar shifter physically stuck in 4th gear? If so see if you can pull the cable out from the long arm on the cassette joint then give it a good pull to see if the mechanism at the hub is free to move. If so the fault is likely to be with the shifter or the cable run into it.

It’s strange. It’s like the cable has gone slack. But, it doesn’t seem to be broken.

The shifter clicks up and down the gears but changes nothing.

What happens with the yellow line in the window?

It turns out that I had broken the lockring - it's made of plastic with a metal washer attached...
Mamachari in Walthamstow were great and had a hunt through the spares box to find one for me.
They know their stuff when it comes s to hubgears.
