Paste the wall wallpaper
« on: 02 January, 2018, 12:06:30 pm »
I have just finished papering our cloakroom with paste the wall paper.  I tried the first two pieces, above the door so less than a metre drop, and really struggled to handle the sheets as they were so stiff and unyielding.

For the rest I pasted the paper in the usual fashion and it all went swimmingly well.  There was only one drop in the room that only required cutting in top and bottom so was quite time consuming.  I'm pleased with my pattern matching on both external and internal corners.

Has anyone else used this type of wallpaper?

Yes, once...  I tried the first drop by pasting the wall as instructed and ended up with paste all over the paper, me, the hanging brush and just about everywhere else then gave up and pasted the paper.  The main problem I had was that as you brush out each piece the brush cannot help but pick up paste off the wall beyond the edge of the paper and then transfer it to the face of the paper from where it gets onto your hands and so on.  Now I only ever use ready-mixed paste and always paste the back of the paper.  Ready pasted paper is rubbish too.

Never knew a length of paper was called a drop. When my father was wallpapering he called them several other things, but only when Mum wasn't around.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Wallpaper? It's 2018. They've invented paint.

But how else are you supposed to get that soft textured affect of flock wall paper? - the cat can only do the first few inches of a freshly painted wall.

It must be nice to have perfect walls!

I put up some heavy lining paper in our living room to hide the less than perfect surface of the walls. Unfortunately, in certain lights you can still see the imperfections quite clearly.

I always apply paste to both wall and paper before hanging.

Wall papering. One of those times where size is important.

It's quite exciting, peeling layers and layers of old paper off walls.

In one house I came to a lining of immediately post-war Daily Express pages: Churchill extolling the leadership of Stalin, and James Cameron (one of the best journalists ever) expounding on economic policies.  It was slow work, reading and removing that final layer.

Yes, and I think it is easier than traditional wallpaper. The trick is to lay a first coat of slightly diluted glue with a pain roller, and let it dry overnight. The real coat of glue will then takes longer to dry out, and the paper  will be more workable.

Quite.

My flat does have lining paper throughout (put up by previous residents, not me). I've no intention of tearing it off, as I don't particularly want to know what horrors lie beneath.

I confess we have lined paper in most rooms and we left it as it was in decent condition. The only places it was removed required completely replastering. I think the lining paper may actually be holding the house together.

Yeah, my flat is held together by lining paper and expanding foam.

Having said that, I LOVE stripping wallpaper.
