They slow down but by all accounts do still do what worms do. I've seen wormies with blankets around them but mine have survived any number of frosts, infact it's the hot weather that killed off the last lot.

You're supposed to bung a blanket over them but I never bother, they survive (or at least, some die and come spring they bounce back).
