Interested in anybody's pics of the controls to remember them, as well as any impromptu ones.
I took some this time after resolving to remember to...

https://share.icloud.com/photos/0eGa2q5Ms-uWSkdWuhfGUkAUQ

Hope the link works, it's as closer as I can get to making my phone do what I want it to until I get back home...
Hopefully you can work out from the location which ones they are, adding captions was trying my patience  ;D

Also does anybody know what website the pro photos of riders are uploaded to please?

I'm never impressed with the Maindru photos. Last two editions I've refused to buy the photos because basically they were crap: most weren't even properly in focus.

Did they have prints for people to view at Rambouillet? The thumbnails on the Maindru web site are so small you can't tell if the pics are in focus or not.

I was thinking along the same lines Wobbly..
They're good as a souvenir but they're not photographically good.
I would have liked either a really nice backdrop or some bokeh, but not just random buildings or, especially, cars. Any shot with a car in the frame certainly won't be being bought by me.
It's a shame no one did any panning shots. It's not that hard, all you need is a descent so riders are going well over 20mph, set your shutter to about 1/30 or 1/40, and follow the rider using burst as they pass.
If I didn't ride I'd try and do better myself. Maybe I could try LEL...

I think if I bought one and it was out of focus I would demand a refund as that's just unprofessional.

H267 Alexandrine Henry, from Rambouillet. 83.33.31.

I was all set to defend Maindru, as it's a difficult job they do. But that is a better photo, not least because she's wearing a fairly nondescript yellow top in their shots. It's descending from Roc Trevezel, towards Carhaix. I've straightened it up.

The Randonneurs France top looks good on her. It's a pity that the front light is aimed a bit high to avoid the bag, that must have been an annoyance.

Be a little careful if you download the 'finishers pack' from Maindru.   It displays your time and it is, of course, wrong.   Should have bought the plain ones.

I have logged a query on their website.   Let's see if anything come back.

I've got 16 photos in my Maindru pack...there's gotta be one worth keeping in there by law of averages, no? Still debating whether to spend the 49 euros...

Alexandrine was riding the new-ish Singer she got for her 40th, replacing the Singer she got for her 18th. She was escorting Dominique her father (also on a Singer) round his 12th PBP Randonneur.

Post by: zigzag on 27 August, 2019, 12:44:03 pm
if the bike is ridden in dry conditions there is no reason for it to be not clean. lovely looking bike, only why so many spokes in the wheels - half of them would do the job just as well for a slender rider like her.
Title: Re: Photos
Post by: LittleWheelsandBig on 27 August, 2019, 12:49:24 pm
So the wheel stays straight if a spoke breaks. I passed one 80hr rider two hours after the start with his rear tyre just touching both chainstays. I think he got another spoke at a control because I saw him a day later but he had a long way to go to get assistance. Nice aero carbon wheel but not very straight.
Title: Re: Photos
Post by: zigzag on 27 August, 2019, 01:01:10 pm
i agree re spoke breakages, but struggle to understand how 20/24 spokes are fine for a 80kg pro sprinter able to push 1.5kw+ but a 55kg randonneur needs 36/36. seems way ott.
Title: Re: Photos
Post by: LittleWheelsandBig on 27 August, 2019, 01:06:23 pm
A pro sprinter gets a spare wheel within seconds and new wheels every year. A randonneur, not so much. It is a risk versus benefits decision. I lean towards always finishing, no matter what. Pro racers will pull out of a race to save themselves for the next race if they can’t win the current one.
Title: Re: Photos
Post by: rob on 27 August, 2019, 01:21:24 pm
This was the first time I had trusted lighter spoking going with 20/28.   I had previously used 36/36 as, if you break a spoke, you can still ride.

I pringled a front race wheel on a 12hr that had 18 spokes and it nearly did for my race.
Title: Re: Photos
Post by: zigzag on 27 August, 2019, 01:24:12 pm
while i agree that very low spoke count (e.g. 16/20) would be a bit risky (for her), something like 20/24 would be totally fine if the wheels are built with tlc and to the same standard as the rest of the bike. i'm yet to break a spoke having cycled over 100,000km on lowish spoke count wheels, mainly 18/20 and 20/24.

There's lots of things we could do without. It's a traditional build. 32 or 36 spokes is part of the 'look'. Why go for fewer? I assume in an effort to shave a few minutes off a 3 to 4 day ride?
Pleasantly surprised to see a photo of me on the French forum....

She's using high-flange hubs, which are available in 32 and 36 hole drillings. The continentals tend to go for 36/36 on tourers, as they like front panniers. A truly traditional British tourer would have 32 front, 40 rear.

I had a word with the mechanic at Quedillac, and he said the main problem was spoke breakage. Each proprietary wheel set has its own bespoke 'rayons'. So it's a bit of nightmare, unless spares are carried. A bit like gear hangers.

Anyone able to name the village or town where I took this photo? I know its just after Carhaix, but exact name of what it is and where it is would be useful?  Thank you.

It's a sculpture called 'The Dancers' in Poullaouen.

Looks like it's been moved since Google Streetview went through.
It's at a kid's playground here...

That's where it was when we filmed it in 2015.

Street view is from 2014, could that be a "here's a scale prototype of what we want to put up in the town, what do you think?"

There was something else weird there as well, stainless steel butterflies, or something equally hallucinatory. It seems to originate from a 1% levy on local taxes.

Alexandrine was riding the new-ish Singer she got for her 40th, replacing the Singer she got for her 18th. She was escorting Dominique her father (also on a Singer) round his 12th PBP Randonneur.

Then Im must have seen her on her old Singer during her (and my) first PBP. She was being dragged along by a very short wheelbase tandem with her dad&uncle on it.

I see from Facebook that L'Equipe has 8 pages on PBP. Heather met their photographer just below Roc Trevezel,  I was walking up the road in search of the best angle on the mast. I'd have liked to have met him myself.

I have to go to town still so I'll check if I can find a copy.

I't's not today's. I've tried to get it online, but my bank has questioned the payment, and requires confirmation. Hopefully that's not 99p wasted.

99p is often the amount scammers will try if they get hold of your bank card details. A test to see if it works. Bit stupid in my case as I'd instantly recognise that amount as not one of my transactions.

Ivo, did you know that Dominique and Christian did their 11th PBPs Randonneur on the same tandem in 2015?

Alexandrine has 1 PBP Rando listed under her maiden name and now 2 listed under her married name. No doubt there are other examples of multiple PBP finishes not being properly recognised in ACP’s records of PBP recidivistes.

Good, the only copy which arrived here in town (only 10km north of the extreme limits of the Francophonie) was already sold out.

No, but I do remember that it was a very interesting, very short, tandem.

I got a copy online. A bit of a disappointment, mainly pictures of riders looking out of it at controls, and no real content.

I've got 16 photos in my Maindru pack...there's gotta be one worth keeping in there by law of averages, no? Still debating whether to spend the 49 euros...

Be a little careful if you download the 'finishers pack' from Maindru.   It displays your time and it is, of course, wrong.   Should have bought the plain ones.

As I didn't hit my target time this is an easy choice  ::-)

If you click on the photo you want you can buy that one only. 11 or 12 euros though....

I have logged a query on their website.   Let's see if anything come back.
In what way wrong? Mine shows the correct time when I look at the preview. Although I initially it did show 00.00.00 this was changed at so.e point to 79.20 which correlates closely enough with my gps track to be credible. Perhaps you were hasty in ordering?

My start to finish GPS is 79.15 add on time to walk to park bike, walk to control desk, wait, adjust for the official's watch etc. The 79.20 quoted is very credible.

Should there not be some preliminary finishers list from the organisers by now?

Mine showed 89:34:52.   My time was 69:48 provisionally.

Looking at it today and using preview it now has the right time.   I cropped mine in the end.   The time doesn't add much, TBH, so I'd not bother with that option again.

i agree re spoke breakages, but struggle to understand how 20/24 spokes are fine for a 80kg pro sprinter able to push 1.5kw+ but a 55kg randonneur needs 36/36. seems way ott.
Is about risk mitigation. The loss of speed on such a ride is minimal for the higher spoke count, but the chance of spoke breakage is nearly zero. I have not broken a spoke on a hand build wheel is (memory here might not be true) 5 years, but rode low spoke count wheel for one year and broke two spokes. It might not happen very often but when it does the consequences could be great.

You don't need the the extra spokes, but it's the peace they give you that counts.

the discussion was about the lady in the photo, who weighs (say, ~30kg) less, so for her low spoked wheels would be plenty strong and ride nicer. the peace comes at a cost of increased drag (which may not matter to most).

Not many potholes to worry about on the track and pro road racers have spare bikes following them around. Anyway, spokes don't break due to excessive torque on the hub from the 1.5kw drive power but from mechanical damage. I broke a spoke on a single with low spoke count Campy wheels and had to fixed it with a fiber spoke. I broke one on a tandem with 40 spoke rear wheel and was able to true it up and continue. YMMV.

if the bike is ridden in dry conditions there is no reason for it to be not clean. lovely looking bike, only why so many spokes in the wheels - half of them would do the job just as well for a slender rider like her.

High spoke count wheels fit the bikes style though.
