Richard Ellis Memorial Permanents Weekend 10th & 11th October
« on: 21 August, 2020, 07:39:12 pm »
The Richard Ellis Memorial 100 & 200km calendar events are shelved for this year, but I have got both routes available as permanents. Assuming there's still a 6 rider limit by then, how about a weekend of riding both perms? I suggest 10th and 11th October, the former of which would have been the calendar event date, though it could be other weekends in October.

If your entry form names the first preference day for each event (if you can do both Sat and Sun), I'll try and juggle entries to meet the AUK limit. Initially ACME members only, but I may be able to throw it open to others nearer the time. Theoretically we can have 12 riders doing both over the 2 days. Mary Ellis has expressed interest in being involved, but meeting her and maybe family at the Maglia Rosso would probably be the extent of it.

Is anyone still up for this? I'm going to ride the 200km perm tomorrow, so will probably do the 100 on 10th October.

I’m on my 400km DIY that weekend, unless there are reasons it won’t be possible. Good luck , and hope you get a few takers. I do swing out via Essex and Suffolk on my first leg on Sat so may cross paths before I head north.

Since I haven't ridden a 200 since the last Richard Ellis I may well be in for Sunday. Sadly I am but a shadow of my PBP self at the moment having been working hard and eating harder and basically written off the 2020 season... but I might be able to keep up for the first 50k... I will decide later this week if that's ok. Would be good to see you all again!

One 100km place for Saturday and one 200km place for Sunday. Of course there are also 6 x 200km places up for grabs on Saturday and the same number for the 100km on Sunday, if anyone is interested. I'll let the Ellis Family know what's happening, just in case they should by chance go for lunch at the Maglia Rosso.

Any thoughts about start times? The calendar times are 09:00 for the 100km and 07:30 for the 200km. The Orchard Tea Gardens are now on their Winter schedule and don't open until 10:00, so an 08:00 start might be more sensible. The other week I realised I'd be too early, so had a second breakfast at the A505 McDonalds, then a coffee and scone early elevenses at the Orchard. This was my 'recovery' 200km following the 600 and 300km, in the middle of my SR series week ... I did eat a LOT.

8:00 is good for me. Hopefully not too early for our antipodean Londoner, although he is usually good for a 7:30 start so will be able to enjoy the lay in!

Where are we leaving from, Tomsk Towers?

 Some have paperwork to hand in and brevets to collect, so yes, 08:00 start from my front door! I'll need p-o-p for my brevet, (but you all won't, unless you drop me and head off into the distance!) so will head up the town just before 8 and be back outside shortly after.

Any more? 2 places on the 100 and 1 on the 200. 09:00 start for the 100 and 08:00 for the 200 ok?

Looks like a dry-ish forecast and a chance to test your winter clothing options. The winter bike will be deployed - still running in new (fixed) transmission, so a little noisy - apologies in advance! I'm expecting a bit of a 'Social Season' ride with full use of the cafes: Maglia Rosso of course on both rides; Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester and possibly also the Station Buffet, Manningtree on the 200; maybe just the traditional garage forecourt in Halstead, as by then the cafes will have shut. There's still the pubs for a coffee if needed - I've been in the rather upmarket 'Bull Inn' at the foot of the hill before.

Same here, I’ll be out on my 400, getting back home for breakfast then sleep on Sunday all being well. I do pass through Great Dunmow on Saturday but somewhat after you’ll have all left.

Have a good couple of group perms

Just The Straggler and myself rode the 100km today. We dropped in briefly on Brian Mann in Belchamp St Paul - good to have a catch-up. A nice leisurely lunch at the Red Magnolia, as I keep on (deliberately) misnaming it in my head, then a bit of a slog back into the westerly wind. On the last leg, a visitation for The Straggler, fixed while I watched the world go by in a fairly busy Finchingfield. On the way into the village we passed a fairly weird looking Goth photo-shoot/filming on both sides of the road, but too short a ride to be a hallucination ... I think.

I've been in touch with Mary Ellis and told her our plans for this weekend. She just might be there at lunchtime tomorrow.

Well done to the Dynamic Dunmow Duo. Unfortunately the Big Saxon succumbed to his usual seasonal cold, but lives to fight another day, signed up for Wilkyboy next week and Huggy on 7th.

Starting to feel the isolation now with no group rides to speak of and winter coming, so my visits to Essex are much welcomed. Maybe John Thompson's Suffolk/Norfolk rides will also be worth a trip.

A good sociable ride for the four of us on Sunday: myself, Despeuch, elliothj and AndrewT. Civilised elevenses at the Orchard Tea Garden, Grantchester, about an hour and a half at the Red Magnolia, Hawstead, with Mary Ellis (for once the slow service wasn't an issue) and then at Manningtree, after finding the Station Buffet shut, with the Tesco Express my next thought, Elliot spoted a great little place (Cafe Rio) on the corner opposite the 'Mogul' of Green and Yellow Fields fame. Then just the garage in Halstead at dusk. A few spots of rain but nothing serious, though a huge double rainbow in Manningtree. Fairly light winds, and from behind when it briefly picked up in the middle of the day.

A pretty full value ride, but brisk on the road, with about 3 hours off the bike.
