Legally you could smash through at 30 while the cars can only do 20, but in practise, I don't think the clubs could be seen to encourage that.
If it means more sensible driving and fewer casualties, that's a small price to pay.
I suppose bikes could potentially catch, and be baulked by, cars travelling at the limit, however unlikely that is in practice.

TTs are run through 30mph zones, though, and a lot of elite riders can top that speed on the flat.
Hard work sometimes pays off in the end, but laziness ALWAYS pays off NOW.

But speed limits don't apply to bikes.

Yet.

But speed limits don't apply to bikes.  Road races have the problem of motorised escort vehicles, of course.

A bigger problem for TTs could be traffic calming associated with 20mph limits.  I despise traffic calming as a cyclist - chicanes, islands and speed cushions all bring you into conflict with (already frustrated) motons

Physical traffic calming things can have the effect of increasing pollution. Straightforward speed limits reduce pollution, AIUI

I read somewhere, but can't remember where, so it might be wrong, that physical speed restriction is no longer required in 20mph limits. Besides which, in practice as we've already said, most of this will be 30.

I’m not sure if it has been updated, but there were two versions of 20mph. Zones and Limits. There were “criteria” for each one. I believe that Zones are meant to have physical restriction infrastructure. Limits have signage.

It's often difficult enough in 30 or even 40mph zones for lead cars, if there's any downhill involved at the front of a peloton.
